on the subject of shaggy manes...
    #8527646 - 06/15/08 06:19 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

what other mushroom resembles a shaggy mane when it is immature?  i remember seeing them in my backyard thinking they were shaggy manes, i wasnt totally sure so i didnt mess with them, but as they matured the caps could be as big as nine inches around, and they had green gills.  i did not get a spore print, but i hope this gives somewhat of an idea of what it would be.

lepiota's and macrolepiota's look similar to shaggy manes, but with green gills it was probably Chlorophyllum molybdites, you were right to stay away from it.

Agreed, the spore print would have been green for sure.

On the subject of look a likes, there are other coprinus species that can also resemble them

There are a few other species that could be mistaken for Shaggy Manes.

The most obvious example would be Podaxis pistillaris, an arid environment mushroom that is sometimes referred to as a Desert Shaggy Mane. Some other potentially similar species would be Montagnea arenaria and Longula texensis.

Happy mushrooming!

They tend to be darker colored. As far as size goes, all of these species vary enough that there is significant overlap.

All 3 of the species I mentioned are secotioid fungi. That is, the cap never opens up like a true Shaggy Mane's cap does. Instead, the gills remain inside, almost like a puffball with gills inside. They also tend to have a relatively wood like texture compared to a Shaggy Mane.

Happy mushrooming!

Look alikes are very subjective, its hard to say what someone else would mistake for a deadly mushroom.

Amanita virosa resembles the shaggy mane according to this guy who accidently ate the destroying angel thinking he was picking shaggy manes.

Chilling story.

This is a good reason to find mushrooms in as many stages as possible before consuming them.  I never eat a species unless there are mature specimens of the type nearby to collect and study.

this cap opened up all the way and was the size of a small dinner plate.  ive found shaggy manes all around the forest, and along side the dirt road like they say.  i was just doubting this mushrooms.  i think they werent as shaggy as usual.

Shaggy Manes never open up like other mushrooms. The bottom edge of the cap turns to ink like goo that drips off, eventually leaving a bare white stem with maybe a little black goo on it. If your specimens are opening up, then they are probably, as suggested above, Lepiotas or Chlorophyllums.

Happy mushrooming!

yep they opend up and didnt have the goo, thats how i knew that i made the right choice in staying away from them.  i didnt take a real close look at them, but i guarentee i can distinguish the two.
