Pics of jars. One is stunted or a late bloomer?
    #8525307 - 06/14/08 11:11 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

These are my six - half pint jars i did using the WBS tek. they all look good except for one. This one jar has a chunk of healthy mycelium floating around in loose wbs, it seems to have stopped inoculating like the others. As far as I can tell there is nothing I did differently with this jar, the conditions have all been the same. There is no apparent contams and the fae is just like the others.

It might be there is a little more moisture in this jar than the rest, that's the only thing I can think of. Would that stunt the growth and if so, should I not use the myc in this jar to spawn to my bulk substrate?

Any input is appreciated!

those 5 look perfect, IME if it takes too long then something is wrong

i'l wait till an expert helps you tho, it could be too much water or some bacteria maybe

My other question:

I'm spawning to 50/50 hpoo and straw. I want to case too, but would it suffice to just use vermiculite since the casing layer is for retaining moisture and the hpoo mix gives the nutrients?

using vermiculite only is fine, iv done it plenty of times

try to get peat moss if u can,
my pinset with 50/50 was better than just verm if i can remember correctly

Okay, I'll try that...wasn't sure if a verm/peat casing would be overkill.

Thanks for responding.

So it's acceptable to use just verm in your mix? I could skip the BRF part if I had to? Not recommended though?

if you mean the substrate in jars part..you need the BRF, it's nutritive...

dont use that 6th jar for spawn that's not colonizing.  it's not colonizing for some reason or another.  your best bet is to just give it a little smell test.  if it doesnt smell like fresh mushrooms it's a bad jar.  if all 6 of your jars were all prepared the same it's highly unlikely that just the one has an off water content.  more than likley it's contaminated,  that could of easily happened along the way. but who knows.  what are you using for filtration on your jars? swiffers?

I know that, I realized I didn't have any at the moment, my situation didn't allow me to go get some that day...so I improvised (shrug)
