this is way too elusive for me
you learn to direct your attention to coax your mindset or attitude into a way you like it
nothing too obscure about having an inclination for this
mindset or attitude is one thing. mental state is a different thing. take psychedelics for instance. as the fading of moments takes longer and longer to dissapear (more and more stoned) the mental state changes. this behavior of mind is different than attitude - which is your "ego stuff" or programming content - playing out on the mental stage.
being stoned is also different from less layered forms of experiencing, i.e. mental states with shorter fading of moments, all the way to ordinary consciousness which is barely layered at all - ordinarily one has a very clear "sense of time", and space.
layering of consciousness involves altered sense of time and space (moments overlap and defy simple sequence) to the degree that it is very difficult to describe what one is experiencing.
We, here at the shroomery, have mostly been exposed to those "states" of mind that are more layered, i.e. from mushrooms and while visiting those states many of us have remarked how impossible it is to bring back any semblance of that to ordinary consciousness.
Occasionally we return with deformed souvenirs, quasi enlightenments, visions that get flattened to near meaninglessness, even though the recounting of the experiences gets reduced to nonsense, we are utterly commited to the wonder we had glimpsed. often frustrated by the loss of it.
that is where state of mind comes in. - strangely, ideation from more layered states is not communicable to less layered states, though co-trippers in a simmilar state of mind can seemingly share the same wonder.
state of mind is way different than attitude which is more about how you express yourself and how you interpret the world - "ego".
state of mind is the state of the engine itself, while attitude and memory are content.
shifting the state of mind breaks the chain that follows from attitude process (ego), by introducing unrecognizable artifacts (hard to react to) and by slowing the reaction time itself.
these refreshing little pauses permit perspectives that would not occur when running the usual program. .........................
so yes, you do learn to coax your attention. this puts the engine into another state. but you do not actually drive the engine at all. you just shift gears. what happens happens, you may not like it at all.
as to me being vague about running out of options. let me just say that if you never run out of options, you are either very blessed or very accepting.
(what lengths I go to, in order not to seem vague!)

so what you do when you meditate is layer the mental signals, creating novel perspectives for yourself - perspectives of the content; what disposes you to act or think in one way or another
these perspectives aren't necessarily what you want.
but you learn to perceive them without letting them ignite a chain reaction, whether they seem enticing or repellent
the ego doesn't have its way. but what this seems to do over time is sort of "chill out" the ego, so that you might go about your goals without so much fuss (like mental whining)
and, of course there are the studies that show meditation reduces stress (like cortisol levels) and stabilizes emotions
but i think what you meant when you said meditation isn't for everyone is that while you are doing it, it might be like sitting in the fire, or wading in choppy water
then i think my argument about adventure still holds; someone may want to just sit on the couch and watch tv, but they really should do something more adventurous
