I get a little squirrely when they go after me nuts.

I agree with Alan that it looks like an Agrocybe, based on my wood-mulch and lawn findings over the past 1-2 months. The OP is a brave one in tasting the shroom before identifying it...

Tasting a mushroom for identification purposes is fine as long as you spit it out after chewing and tasting (not eating).

I know, but I still think it is brave if one hasn't at least gotten the specimen down to Genus. I wouldn't taste an Inocybe for anything less than $100

I taste Inocybe all the time, not really very concerned about small amounts of muscarine.

I don't think its Gymnopilus, the gills are too dark of a brown and the stem and cap is not yellow enough.  Looks a little like Agrocybe.

I agree. I found a lot of Agrocybes growing from wood when I went hunting in GA about 3 weeks ago.

Gills look free from the stem.

And G. junonius is the current name.

Source please.  Who published this change and where?

Orton was the original publisher of the name G. junonius acoording to Hesler.

Is a new monograph available?

I also noticed that Mycologia, the peer-reviewed journal of the Mycological Society of America, was distinguishing between G. junonius and G. spectabilis as late as its 98(5), 2006 issue.

Hmmm...  Well, this is according to IF, and I have not read any good arguments for or against the synonymy.

Is this the Mycologia article you are referring to?  If you think it is a valuable read to shed some light on the issue, I will read it when I am at the University next.

Ahh the British Mycological Society.  That explains it.

Yes, that is the article.

If you don't mind look it up at the university and inform us about it.

I have special interests in Gymnopilus.

Now that DNA splitting is all the rage, someone really needs to do an entire monograph.  Hesler's is  1969 vintage, a bit old.

Yeah, too many mushrooms, too few researchers and too little time I'm afraid.  :frown:

Seriously, I'll try and look it up, but there is always a lot to do when I go to the lab, and I never know exactly how to search for the most recent phylogenetic studies on each genus/species.  But I'll try and do that and send myself the document so i can refer to it later.

Thank you.

You know, CureCat, mycology has a serious lack of good field researchers (which is why the Shroomery makes advancements in it).

I know someone who could help if she were inclined.

Hint hint

I'm bad at hints.  I didn't get that last one.  But I had someone explain it to me...

Thanks!
