Hey everyone,
Today i went to format my laptop and ran into a problem which i have no idea how to resolve.
Im currently have an Acer Aspire 5100 and used a standard xp disk to try and format/reinstall windows, tho it seems when it gets so far thru the installation it dies (no point in particuler, sometimes it dies straight away)
Its weird thought because windows runs fine. After my first failed atempt (although i did try it 3 or 4 times, but same problem) i used the Acer system restore to format my system and get it back to factory settings, altough this program changed some settings, reset my computer and started to format, then my laptop died and now its f*cked.
everytime i try to install windows it just dies.
Now it dies as soon as i turn on computer, although if i take battery out and back in, it lasts longer.
I have no idead what the problem is as it seemed to run fine when windows was working.
Im thinking maybe the harddrive is corrupt, memory is bad, or its over heading (fan issues)
Any help?
regards, mushie man

Yeah it sounds like some of your basic BIOS/Operating system drivers may have gotten corrupted or lost. I doubt that its over heating if it dies as soon as you turn it on, unless the shut down settings were some how changed in your BIOS. I would say take it into a shop.

Pull the battery, remove AC power, and press the power button for a few seconds. This clears any residual power from the logic board of most computers/laptops and tends to reset anything that can be reset without power. Next, put in the battery, hook up AC, and power up the laptop. Make a note of the time. Go into BIOS and select the option to restore defaults, save, and exit. (maybe several steps).
Feel around the edges of the laptop for moving air. Are the fan(s) working? You should feel warm air blowing out by now. If not, turn it off, you found your problem.
At this point, I would boot from windows install media and completely delete the partition and recreate it. Let windows format the drive and see how far the install makes it.
If the computer shuts down, note the time. If it is a heat issue, you should see the first shutdown take a while (10 to 15 minutes) while the next shutdowns occur faster and faster. After a while, it will get to where you can't turn it on anymore without letting it cool. (Not wise to push it to this point.)
If it isn't heat, but continues to crash during an install, I would guess one of a couple things... memory is an easy one. See if you have two sticks... if so, yank one. If it still has problems, swap the two, so you are running only on the second. (Some laptops require two sticks at once; most do not.)
Could also be your install media doesn't have proper drivers for your laptop. This is sometimes an issue with SATA drives and older XP install media.
I've also seen failing hard drives take down a system, though usually as a crash rather than a hard turn off. Almost always, if the laptop turns itself off without warning, either the battery is dead (as in no good, usually) or the laptop is too hot.

I have now fixed the problem although i still don't understand what exactly the problem was.
When using the Windows XP disk it crashed, and also had the same problem when using the Acer Recovery Disks. I figure it must be something to do with the partition settings of some kind so i got my hands on a copy of windows vista and its installed without a hitch.
But this vista is a OME version, my brothers to be precise, so if anyone can help me out with the activation (30 days remaining),as its registered to my brothers motherboard, that would be MUCH appreciated.

No worries on that at all. First, try and activate it like you normally would through an Internet connection. If that fails, use their automated system (number provided when you attempt to activate without the Internet) and select the option of hardware change. You'll read the number given by the system (you'll know what I mean when you get to that screen) and they'll give you a new activation code to enter.
Worst case scenario, call Microsoft and tell them you changed out your motherboard or had to reformat you HDD. Easy fix and shouldn't take you no more than 15 minutes using any of the methods I just described.
