Psilocybe Semilanceata is indeed the most common active growing in the UK.
you do however get:
Psilocybe Cyanescens Psilocybe Crobulus Panaeolus Subbalteatus Gymnopilus Spectabilis/Junonius Other Gymnopilus species
and then of course Amanita Muscaria and Amanita Pantherina, but those two are not recommended (not psilocybin - muscimol and ibotenic acid).
hope that helps

@ Alan:
jesus i had no idea we had that many actives in the UK.
about the Crobulus though, i think you should look into adding that to the list, i have a pretty good guide book (Roger Phillips - the guy from www.rogersmushrooms.com) that says it grows here, and its "uncommon" as opposed to "rare" for cyans, so it cant be THAT hard to find

Psilocybe crobula grows all over Europe however it is not in the active clade so it didn't make the list.

I'd put my money on liberty caps in the UK. They're plentiful in most years if you look in the right places. Wait until autumn comes and temperatures drop to just above freezing.

Peak district or other areas.. mines in an field that cows graze on for a few months a year.
Look for fairly short (a foot or so) grass in wild areas (non-cultivated).

Fields that animals graze in, so they're quite unkept

This thread has been closed.
Reason: Neither species grows in forested areas.
Psilocybe cyanescens grows in wood chips in urban areas and in gardens.
Your questions are best answered by using the search engine. Try the species names you are interested and your country name as search terms. Let me know if you still have any questions.
3. Do not ask what mushrooms can be found growing in your state or immediate area. This information is easily found in the Mushroom Hunting FAQ and/or has been posted at least once elsewhere on the net. Also see this document: http://www.shroomery.org/8461/Which-mushrooms-grow-wild-in-my-area
6. No asking when or where mushrooms, or a specific mushroom species will grow. This includes, asking what habitat a mushroom[s] can be found- or their preferred fruiting conditions. This can be very simply answered by using the "search posts" feature: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/search.php
