Grow-op goes up in smoke [OTTAWA]

Firefighters had to pull out of a burning Nepean home early yesterday after they discovered a possible marijuana grow operation in the basement.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but police believe it was arson.

District Chief Lyle Fraser said a firefighter going to work just before 6:30 a.m. noticed smoke coming from the bungalow at 52 Sullivan Ave., southeast of Meadowlands Dr. and Woodroffe Ave.

Crews arrived and searched the ground floor, finding plenty of smoke but hardly any flames. They went into the basement and noticed flames engulfing the room, which was filled with electrical equipment.

TRICKY

"We pulled our crews out and reassessed," Fraser said. "We weren't sure what we were dealing with in the basement."

Firefighters attacked the blaze through the windows and used a special hose nozzle that sprays water in a circular pattern. They re-entered the home and put out the fire.

Fighting grow-op fires can be tricky for firefighters because the buildings are sometimes rigged with dangerous hydro bypasses. Investigators discovered the home had a bypass.

"We really didn't know what our threat was," Fraser said.

No one was home at the time of the blaze.

Fire officials estimate the damage at $75,000 to the building and $10,000 to its contents.

There was no word if suspects were identified.

I imagine when that man came home he simply walked right past his burned out house. Since it was probably surrounded by police and all.
