So, lately Ive opened my eyes to the way o the shroom again and have been keeping my eyes out for some fresh specimen in the area. I hear there arent many people hunting in my area (Southern Ontario)... or so I read. I have a few more specimen to post after this one but for now I would like to figure out what this little guy is
I have come to the loose conclusion that the specimen above is either a Fading Scarlet Waxy Cap(Hygrophorus Miniatis) or a Scarlet Waxy Cap(Hygrophorus Coccineus).
Gills: Close - Distant
Stem: Not brittle, tore upon picking.
Cap: Red/Orange. No color change was observed in drying. Quite smooth.
Spore print: White or no spores dropped as cap was already torn/mature upon picking. Less mature mushroom was seen a few feet away with a convex cap.
Bruising: No bruising noticed upon picking. However, the bottom of the Stem does appear darker.
Location: Picked in Central/Eastern Canada. Southern Ontario.
Thanks for checking it out!

PS. If any of the images are unclear I have higher resolution images and images that I did not post of this specimen.

I don't think it is Hygrophorus miniatis or H. coccineus. Due to the black staining it seems like a good match for Hygrocybe conica according to Mushrooms Demystified page 116.

All of the bright coloured, slimy Waxy Caps were separated out from Hygrophorus and reclassified into the genus Hygrocybe. The drab, white and off white species remain in Hygrophorus.
That said, i agree with Alan on H. conica.

Ahh, yess The gills do also seem to be nearly free opposed to attached or attached/slightly descending (according to National Audobon...). Note that a lot of the black is dirt in these images, however I think you are correct. There does seem to be bruising on the stalk which also seems to be somewhat longitudally lined and twisted.

Ohh that's interesting. I see that now in my book (National Audobon Society...) It does say AKA Hygrocybe Coccinea and Hygrocybe Marginata.
