discouraged....
    #8508209 - 06/10/08 05:46 PM (15 years, 8 months ago)

hello everyone,

so, nothing has really gone that well. out of 6 cakes, none have colonized fully before getting ridiculous early pins, and each are sometimes weeks apart from going into the fruiting chamber. im not sure why some take a month longer to reach same point in growth. just riddled with uneveness in the whole process.

so after a very pitiful flush, i can't tell if the cake has become contaminated.

also, i have a 2nd flush that has been back in the FC for over a week, with no signs of any fruits.....

anyways, would appreciate any thoughts.

thanks

Looks like it is just bruised... Did you dunk it after the first flush?

That's bruising.  Dunk it for 24 hours.  Rinse well before and after the dunk.  There's not very many holes drilled in your terrarium, so unless you're fanning and misting several times per day, fresh air could be one reason for dismal production.  Dry cakes don't pin well.

Next time, follow the tek and use 1/2 pints.  They work much better.

AHHHH quickly readjust your tinfoil under cake, its sitting on the perlite. Was the cause for one of my cakes to start a  hidden contam growth underneath the cake.

Yeah sounds shitty man, but dont get discouraged especially if this is your first attempt practice makes perfect and in this hobby patients and persistence are key. I agree with RR it looks bruised and a lil dehydrated dunk that bitch. blind guy is right try and move your cake off the perlite maybe that will help. Not everyone can get the results they want on there first attempt i hope things get better for you.

Oh yeah what strain is it? just curious

the reason things are taking all sorts of different times to be ready may have something to do with using a multispore syringe. if you take a clone sample from a big shroom you will probably get more consistent results. that's my friend's experience, anyway.

You don't want to use jars that are taller than they are wide.  That's why we use wide mouth 1/2 pint mason jars.  Tall, skinny cakes tend to have their moisture drain from gravity to the bottom of the cake.  To get a bit more out of yours after dunking, put a large spoonful of vermiculite on top of the cake and keep it damp.

the way you make the cakes (density, spore solution evenness in each hole etc.) could play a big role in how they are getting done/not done all at the say time too.  Are you mixing each cake individually?  MS, like said, is pretty finicky.  paying really close attention to the evenness throughout the entire process will probably help.

If that's a half pint cake, then your holes look very small. RR suggests 1/4" holes, I believe...
