Headphone socket

Somehow the end of my RCA-3.5mm mini-jack cable managed to snap off and get stuck in my headphone socket. Trying to remove it has pretty much obliterated the headphone socket on my laptop.
I have a microphone socket and a weird socket which sort of looks like this:
(( <-)-) .. Sort of like a tie-bomber with an arrow pointing towards the cockpit (I figure most of you are nerds, so you'll get what I'm on about ).
They all take a 3.5mm plug. Now, I'm wondering whether I can ghetto this up and use that weird socket as a headphone socket.
Else I'm going to have to fork out £70 on an Audigy 2 ZS notebook (a pcmcia soundcard, supported by alsa ).

The port you described is either a line out or line in. depends on direction into the circle. If it looks like a arrow into the circle, aka microphone input.
If it points to the outside of the circle, its an output.
Arrow out = output
Arrow in = input To get your tip out of the port, maybe a magnet, but BE CAREFUL, you can lose all your data. And the tip may not be magnetic. Mabyt if you get a REALLY narrow pair of needle nose pliers.
Only other way is to open the laptop and see if you can push it out from the inside. This may, and probably will violate your warranty, if you have one left.
You just may have to get it into a Pc shop. Be carefull, they may rip you off, or kill your pc...
Best wishes.

Highly unlikely that this will work.
> Only other way is to open the laptop and see if you can push it out from the inside.
50/50 depending on the type of port... most of them that I see in laptops are sealed from the back (to prevent dirt from getting into the machine).
What kind of laptop is it? Most have the ports directly attached to the system board, but some use a 'sound board' or 'io board' to hold the ports.
If it is a sealed port, you can usually get the tip out with an extraction tool. I use a small bit of spring steel to make them, but you can probably improvise. Basic idea is to take a very thin wire and put a slight upward lip bent into the end of it, something like: ______/
(The picture above, the bend is much too large. I use flat spring steel rather than wire. The blades off a street sweeper are perfect, once correctly tempered.)
The idea is to get the tool's lip under/behind the stuck tip, and then pull it out, using the lip to exert pressure.
I learned the technique when studying locksmithing, for extracting broken keys, but it works well for broken plugs too.

I've been trying to do this with a pin for ages.. it ended up fucking the socket more so and the plug is still stuck in there.
Its an Acer Aspire 5102. It has crappy onboard sound and its all sealed. Looks like I'm gonna have to buy the audigy card .

If you can find somebody that works with boards in your area, it is pretty easy to put a new plug on the board. I've got a friend that I send business to about once a week. He charges around $50 plus parts, but you have to tear the laptop apart (and reassemble it) yourself.

One of my friends works with electronics (making precision timing and frequency equipment), so I imagine he'll be able to help me out here.
Getting the whole case apart is a bitch though .

I've decided that its fuggin impossible and I'm gonna save up and buy an external sound card

Well if your going that route i have one last option.
Take a paper clip, straighten it, and apply epoxy on the tip.
Place the tip onto the end of the broken 3.5mm pin, wait till it sets and see if you can pull it out.
I only say epoxy because super glue may not hold, and gorilla glue expands.
From what you have done to the port from trying to dig it out, and deciding to go external, this my be worth it.
Your call.
Good luck.
If you happen to get it out i recommend you, or anyone for that matter to get a 3.5mm Breakaway.
Trust me its worth it. (though after what you have gone through i doubt you need much more convincing.)
