Wild Papaver somniferum
    #8499639 - 06/08/08 11:17 AM (15 years, 9 months ago)

Found this Poppy growing close to a relatives house. Does anyone know what kind of Poppy this is? It looks like Papaver somniferum. Can anyone back me up? I noticed little black specks on them, it may be some type of bug? It seems like the poppies have just lost their flowers and the crowns are starting to point upward, and some are already.

Good find.  I'd wash those bugs (aphids?) off and process them into putty!

P. somniferum, yes, but wild? I donĀ“t think so. Looks like they belong to a happy gardener.

Since the mention of aphids (and not knowing what they were) I decided to research about aphids a little.

MOD EDIT: Links to non sponsors site are not allowed.

It seems one reason aphids are attracted to the poppies is becasue of their yellow color. I would assume that the aphids are feeding on the suculants on the poppy. Would cleaning the poppy by hand and washing with water be sufficent? The poppies seem to be covered with them.

Here are some ways that were found to remove aphids. These are some of the highlighted steps found(copy and pasted) at the website below.

MOD EDIT: Links to non sponsors site are not allowed.

1.Examine your garden regularly for signs of aphids. Look for clusters of the little bugs on new growth and flower buds, as well as on the curled and twisted leaves.

2.Remove the aphids by hand (wearing gloves) or using a sharp stream of water.

3.Capture flying aphids by placing yellow sticky traps near infected plants.

4.Make a nontoxic pesticide by mixing 1 c. vegetable oil with 1 tbsp. liquid dishwashing soap. Add 1 1/2 tsp. solution per cup of warm water to a handheld spray bottle.

5.Hit the aphids directly with above mixture and spray entire plant thoroughly.

7.Rid your garden of ants. Ants love to eat "honeydew," the sugary sap secreted by aphids, and will keep the aphids alive by fending off predators and carrying the sap makers to other plants.
