possible virus, need advice

my girlfriend has an hp laptop. it's a bit old, her parents kind of handed it down. it's running xp, and has norton antivirus, which i don't condone.
the computer has a 40gig HD which for her schoolwork should be plenty. but...
lately if you leave the computer on for a day or so the free space goes from about 3gigs to about 12megs. i will run ccleaner and the windows cleaner and reboot and the freespace will be back up to 2 or 3gigs. a little while later it's saying there is not enough memory to run live update. i even took all of her and her family's documents and stored them on my external HD to free up space. when i did that and rebooted, the space went up to 7gigs, but that was 3 weeks ago, and it hasn't topped 4 since then.
there are 3 issues i am wondering/concerned about.
1-the other day we got norton to scan and it found a trojan. this seems to me like an explanation, but after the supposed disinfection of the virus it is still having the same problem. how the hell can i get the thing off of there if this is the problem and norton sucks?
2-the recycle bin is the "norton protected" recycle bin. basically, anytime you delete anything it seems to save it for a while. if you leave the computer sitting for a day or so, without touching it, all of a sudden there are 1500 protected files in there. i think that must be as high as it goes. if it's a trojan, why the hell is it downloading files and deleting them?
3-when i moved her and her family's data over to my hard drive was i able to access all of her family's data without their passwords? i am unfamiliar with xp, but there were no warnings flashing or anything. i guess my question is, would there be alot of files that i couldn't SEE to move without their passwords?
i know this is a lot of shit, but i really want her computer to work. it's annoying as hell, and we are quite broke.
who the fuck makes viruses and why? ratty dicks. i can see sending one out as revenge, but why the fuck would you fuck over anonymous people?

Sounds like Norton really is crap... I'm not familiar with it, but if the virus keeps downloading itself somehow and Norton keeps deleting it, maybe your right about that stuff in the recycle bin. Or does it quarantine stuff which could be eating up the space? Either way i'd probably try something else to see if that fixes it, AVG is free and it's not that hard to get a license if you want the full version.
As for the passwords, no idea since I never bothered to try using them but good luck.

Look in your Norton Logs and see what trojan it found. Then post the full name here. Maybe someone will recognize it and be able to help you better.

it says trojan.wimad .
i have kaspersky on my computer. all the reviews i read put it on the top, and i have had no trouble at all, and i download alot of shit. it's scanning constantly and catches threats immediately.
my girlfriend got her laptop from her parents, and she said she is going to get kaspersky when her (their) norton subscription is up in like 60 days...i told her she should just get rid of norton when we got the thing.

remove norton. get clamwin (google it, it's free) and then get spybot search and destroy (google it, it's free as well) for spyware. after install, update, scan/clean, and your good to go for the most part.

CRAP, I downloaded the CLAMWIN program and it found 6 bad things on my computer....!?
C:\Documents and Settings\me\Local Settings\Temp\temp.frC9C5: Trojan.Packed-86 FOUND C:\Program Files\BrainWave Generator\brainwave.generator.Regpatch.exe: Trojan.Small-28 FOUND C:\VundoFix Backups\jkklk.dll.bad: Trojan.Vundo-3495 FOUND C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini032208-01.dmp: Trojan.Bat.DeltreeY-3 FOUND C:\WINDOWS\system32\mxgffkro.dll: Trojan.Packed-86 FOUND C:\WINDOWS\system32\neonrtaq.dll: Trojan.Packed-86 FOUND
But, it doesn't look like the clamwin program actually FIXES the problems.... I have got to imagine that one of these things fills up hard drive space, because last week I had over a gig left on my C drive, and now it is at 200mb or less, AND I HAVEN'T DOWNLOADED ANYTHING....!? Cripes....
How screwed am I....?

Is there really any reason to pay for a subscription to a virus program? Isn't that a waste? Are the free programs that much slower in updating?
I'd imagine the free programs could pretty much just copy the virus definitions' relevant parts from the paid subscription ones... I imagine they pretty much do this allready, don't they?
Anyways, I've heard a ton bad about Norton antivirus, and I wouldn't use them without checking things out for myself... I don't know enough to know if they're really worse than other products, but they seem like they've got enough crappy things going against them:
1. They reportedly ignore keyloggers that appear to be from the FBI. Why would you want this even if it was from the FBI, and why would you want a program that ignores a vulnerability no matter who it is from? I also don't like companies that seem to cooperate w/ the government to potentially invade my privacy. Given the choice, I'll take a company that doesn't sell me out to the feds, wtf? http://www.theregister.co.uk/2001/11/27/av_vendors_split_over_fbi/
2. Wikipedia: "According to an article by the Washington Post, Norton Antivirus had one of the worst average response times for providing virus definition updates based on the worst virus outbreaks of 2005, lagging behind every major competitor, including NOD32, Kaspersky, Quick Heal, F-Secure, Sophos, Avira, Trend Micro, F-Prot, Panda, Protector Plus, AVG, avast!, ClamWin, and McAfee.[6]
For everyday viruses, according to an article by Eweek titled Why Is Symantec So Slow with Updates?, Symantec was the only vendor that provided virus definition updates on a weekly basis, as opposed to competitors such as McAfee that provides them on a daily basis or Eset, Sophos, Kaspersky or Panda that provide them several times a day.[7]"
3. Here's a list of 20 reasons Norton sucks from some guy on the internet. Having had the misfortune to use a norton computer on occasion, I can verify some of these complaints:
Quote:
20. Having to type in your serial number while installing and then activating it within 20 days of installation. 19. When Norton corrupts downloading files. 18. When Norton uninstalls its self because a virus threatened it. 17. The stupid task bar tool bar thing that has pop-ups the size of greater Atlanta. 16. The live update reminders. 15. The CPU and RAM consuming virus scans. 14. Its inability to delete any virus, even ones that a three-year-old wrote. 13. How it re-adds its self to your computers start up list. 12. When it says you have spyware on your computer, then does nothing. 11. How when it quarantines a virus, it copies it to the folder. 10. If you use it to delete adware it changes your homepage and locks it. 9. After using Norton to delete spyware it tells you that you have to re-install it to open Microsoft Word. 8. The virus definitions in a Haitian health clinic are more up to date than Norton’s. 7. Norton is over hyped and over-priced. 6. Requires a subscription every year. 5. On any operating system other than XP if your computer gets a virus Norton’s only defense is to initiate “the blue screen of doom” 4. If it comes bundled with a computer and you don’t run thorough set up it will pop back up every time you log in. 3. It tried to tell me that dtgeeks was giving me a virus. 2. The latest version blocks ports that are critical to 99.9% of Internet gaming connections.
And now for the number one reason why Norton is despised worldwide:
1. Because after you realize Norton is crap. You will also find the folder is missing the uninstaller, just like many kinds of adware. Please feel free to correct me about any of these. As always I’m open to suggestion, and will correct any major mistakes.

yeah, norton sucks, like i said, i have kaspersky. i'm too paranoid not to pay for something, and it was at the top of all the reviews i read. it works excellent. i told my girlfriend after this incident that i'm going to remove norton from her laptop and put kaspersky on there.

tell her to fuck norton, waiting 60 days is too long, if you have a downloader trojan on there your just going to keep getting more shit in there! just get Krapersky AVG, I use AVG at work and it gets all the stuff that Norton doesn't haven't used the other one, when you have an AV program go into safemode and do a scan on that level, it will be able to get pretty much everything out at that point and if not follow read the post above. If something is left behind post it and I'd be more than happy to help you out?!

i think i may have resolved the problem with malwarebytes. i shut off the network first so it couldn't download any reinforcements and ran a scan with malwarebytes. it found 8 objects and it has held steady at 5gigs of free space for 24 hours now. if anything happens again, i'll resurrect this thread and try your advice. thanks everybody.

Norton is a piece of shit. Uninstall it.
Kaspersky is good but I'd personally use NOD32 if you want to pay for something good.. or F-Prot or Avast which are free. All top-notch antivirus programs either way.

haha...commercial software can be and a lot of times is much worse than freeware. Being paranoid has nothing to do with this, a lot of open source programs beat the shit out of commercial products.
I have used AVG antivirus for about 5 years now, and have yet to have a problem...and it is completely free. I had mcafee on my laptop for a while, because my university required it for access to their network, and it still got infected with a virus. The only time i used norton it added about 2 minutes to my boot up time and also takes up about 30% of my resources at all times.
Of the commercial products available, from what I have read, kaspersky and nod32 are the best, but I still wouldn't waste my money on them, when the free ones are just as good, if not better.

thanks for the advice, but seriously, i download alot of stuff, and i have had great luck with kaspersky. i'm probably going to stick with it in my house. it has stopped limewire from downloading viruses, it uses pretty much none of my cpu, and the database is updated about every 2 or 3 hours.
the norton is shit though, i wish she would have just let me uninstall it in the first place, but she kept saying no because her dad had paid for the subscription that wasn't expired or some stupid shit. this incident has changed her mind though.
and i get to say "i told you so" which is rare in our disagreements.

dont use avg. it doesnt even have any real-time protection anymore. go with avast if you want something free.
