Does this mean an infra-red lamp will? What part of the spectrum does the mycellia actually respond to? I thought UV for sure.

Blue wavelengths have been proven to stimulate pinning. On the other hand UV is a big NO NO. UV fucks up psychoactives... I'm pretty sure the optimal is something in the 6500K range.. I found bulbs at home depot with this rating for $4/each... 4ft bulbs.. Remember, they don't NEED light for growth, the only use light to trigger themselves into fruiting and tell them which direction to grow in. Not like plants where you get photosynthesis.. The variance in blacklight success mainly has to do with the types of bulbs. Flourescent and incandescent blacklights throw off completely different spectrums. Also .. different types of flourescent blacklights have different effects. Most flourescent blacklight bulbs are manufactured by GE now, so for the most part, its a variance in what size/wattage is used. In addition, blacklights that you purchase at the store aren't made to meet any kinda requirements, they're mainly sold for novelty purposes.

On a side note, I remember a thing were we painted my walls with laundry detergeant and then when you turned on the blacklight you could see all the cool shit we painted, and during the daytime it was invisible. One fun thing was to put powdered detergeant into the carpet.. heheh, made it smell fresh too. The ones that work best say "Makes clothes Brighter". On a side note, I already contemplated adding to substrate/casing layer to do experiment..not a good idea, most detergeants contain anti-fungicides/anti-mold stuff that would kill our little friends.

Bliss-
What wavelength is your blacklight?
If your shrooms were growing straight up, they were probably sensing some other ambient light. Psilocybe cubensis does NOT respond to blacklights, because the wavelength is so short. They respond best to blue light in the 440nm range. You can buy blue light bulbs (flourescent bulbs) at most fish supply stores that will fit your blacklight.

IR is fine for shrooms (not UV) I use a small heat lamp for nightime heating. The shrooms are not affected by this wavelength or distrurbed phototropicaly, it's just for heat. Why do you want to use a blacklight? For a pinning light use a grow type flourescent.
