Usually the ID questions are in the hunting forum.

To ID an Agaricus we need to know about the following:

Bruising reaction (in the cap flesh and inside near the base of the stem) - abuse it good to bruise it
Odor (near the top and bottom of the stem)
Appearance of the ring (try for a photo - need lots of detail if possible)

With that info we might be able to get close.

"the mushroom has no cap"
"but the cap seems to turn slightly darker"
"This [contradictory] enough?"
yes, yes it is

Still need to know about the ring. And that's just to get to the group within Agaricus. To get a really accurate ID we should really be using a microscope to (at least) get the spore size.

Actually, almost all Agaricus have a ring. Some things that would be useful to know about it are:

Where is it on the stem? Near the middle, top, or bottom?
Does it flare out upward, stick straight out, or hang down like a skirt?
How big is it? Does it stick way out, or is it almost not there?
Is it thin, like paper, or thicker, or even cottony?

If you search the web for Agaricus photos, you will get a sense of the variety they have. Knowing what it looks like is valuable for this genus.

And I've said it before, but this time I'll quote Dr. Alexander H. Smith - "the species are very difficult to recognize". If *he* thought so, you know the rest of us aren't gonna find them easy. In other words, I'll guess, but the only person I've ever seen who was actually good at them is Dr. Kerrigan.

Sorry, I misunderstood the "ring, not cap" reference. The fact that there was no ring is indeed significant.

The most likely species I find is either Agaricus campestris or Agaricus solidipes, and the fact that the stem is solid causes me to lean toward the latter.

To verify the ID we need to measure the spore size using a microscope.

Hope that's helpful.
