How late is too late to case??? Also Side Pinning
    #8480859 - 06/03/08 07:34 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

This Hpoo substrate has taken forever to finally pin (likely due to low humidity). Now, a whole mess of pins have appeared almost overnight....but they are all around the sides (once again, humidity problems). In this case, pins really means young, stout shroomies. Is it too late to add a casing layer? Would that help promote a more even flush across the top of the substrate or do the side pins negate any possibility of that happening at this point?

Thanks for any help you may be able to offer

Is the tub clear on the sides?

Side pinning on uncased substrates is usually caused by too low humidity. They pin in the gap around the edges because that's where it's nearly 100% humidity.

You shouldn't add a casing layer at this point. Doing so would increase your chances of contamination because the casing would protect contaminant spores that have landed on the surface.

Side pins are still. . .pins. Let them grow.

RR, I second Triple Tree's thanks. You are a madman.

I've heard about the sides being especially humid... I guess the aluminum foil method is the only way to fix this?

Aluminum foil makes it worse. It reflects light deep into the substrate. However, side pinning isn't really about light, but humidity as said above.
