BIG Monotub 35gal Ecuador MS wbs to straw UPDATED PICS & Print GIVEAWAY.
#8477331 - 06/02/08 10:26 PM (15 years, 9 months ago) |
|
|
This is a 35 gallon monotub. I started off with 3 quarts of wbs which was inoculated with multispore ecuador strain. I got one of the straw bales from michaels and pasteurized it with a bit of gypsum and lime. I used the whole bale. I cased it with 50/50 peat moss with hi-yield hydrated lime. I'm starting to see little knots. I'm hoping for a good flush.
Updates: There are so many pins that it is taking forever to mature. 6/11/08
More pics from today
PRINT GIVEAWAY I'll make about 8-10 prints. Shoot me a PM with the addy. I'll send a few out.

My good friend just finished that exact mono tub, except B+ WBS spawned to coco coir/coffee. It was quite a big success. I wish you luck on yours!

It is starting to pin. I see this growth that is white, but looks a little different. I'm a bit worried that it could turn out to be the green. Just looking for some opinions. Other than that, it's looking good. here is two pics.

Damn! I don't think i've ever had so many pins. There are literally HUNDREDS of them. You can't see all of them from the pic. There isn't an inch that doesn't have a pin. Some of them will probably abort. The mushies are smaller. But there are so many. It's taking a while for them to mature. Theres no contamination either so its looking good.

I haven't put up any pics of my pinset because it would be like a fat girl putting a full-length shot on a dating website. I just take the face shots from funny angles in my tub
Good job so far, gotta sit my tub down and show it this thread.

In my experience prividing the right amount of FAE is the hardest part about going anywhere near bulk. What's your routine for this FAE? I've been having troubles with my cases. I want to try a monotub like yours'- without drilling holes- but the fear of using up all my sub only to get thin shrooms again is chilling.

Technically it. It is a single tub. When I started growing I had never even heard of a monotub and this is the way I started using bulk. It is a monotub, I just didn't drill holes. I fan and mist instead.

Well what would you guys suggest me do about it? I don't know if it's safe to drill a hole in it now.
They are a bit small. I've never had this problem before. It may be because there are so many pins. Think I should drill a couple small holes in it? I can tape tyvek over them.

since your substrate is colonized drilling holes in your tub shouldnt pose any problem at this moment. it's better to have some than none at all. then keep a fan pointing in the corner of the room on low just to keep the air circulating in the room. stuff the holes you drill lightly with polyfill. trust me, this will help alot with your fae. like was stated above if you have thin scrawny shroooms that is a sure sign of high co2 buildup.

I know that is one of the common causes for the skinny tall mushrooms, I just wasn't sure if it would be safe because they are pinning. I will try drilling a couple holes in it. Maybe they will beef up a bit.

Just whenever I think about it. At least 3 times a day. I've got alot of experience with these tubs. I haven't cultivated much in the past year though. So i'm basically doing it from memory. They aren't extremely skinny. But they should be bigger with this tub and substrate. That's why I came to the conclusion about too many mushrooms. I might drill 2 holes in it anyway near the top for extra air. I figured these would be mature by now. I'm hoping I can have them ready this weekend. It's not looking like it though.

Well..Didn't seem to turn out too well. Looks like alot of them aborted. It may have been because of my FAE. I used a hi-yield hydrated lime as well, i'm hoping that had nothing to do with it. I heard it was strong.
I'll still get as many prints out as I can. I will be starting another grow soon as well.

Most of the pinset aborted. It turned out kinda shitty. I did manage to take around 6 prints. I also found some of my cambodian prints, that were taken on computer paper. I'll send some of those out too. I've had probably 20 people PM for prints, i'll get as many out as I can...Dry weight, i'm guessing is about 2 and a half to 3 ounces. Time to dunk this som'bitch and see if I can get a better second flush.

I've got a few theories. Could be the FAE, because there was so many pins. Fanning usually works. I drilled some 5/8" holes in the sides and it was doing a little better. It also could be the lime I used (Hi-Yield) About a teaspoon of it. Other than that, i'm not really sure. Could also be because I used a whole straw bale in a 35 gallon tub with only 2-3 quarts of spawn. I don't see why that would affect it though. I normally use a smaller tub with less straw and still 3 jars.

Yeah FAE seems probable, the amount of hydrated lime you used doesn't seem like it would be too much.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. There were literally HUNDREDS of pins. I'm guessing it just used more FAE than normal and fanning wasn't adequate. I think you've just convinced me after about 4-5 years to start drilling holes in my tubs.
+5 to you.

I have a fan that I leave on 24/7 in the room now. I'm thinking about just rigging a coolmist to the tubs on a timer. This grow should have got me at least over 8 ounces.

That was another experiment that went bad. My last 2 or 3 grows haven't done nearly as well as the ones before. I had a 45 gallon straw tub with combodian in it. Full bale of straw just like the 35 gallon..I neglected the fuck out of it, being cocky. It contaminated on me. I got about 2 ounces though. I was experimenting with different types of lime too.

Well, it contaminated right before it started flushing. I tried to fight it. Fruits will still grow in a contaminated tub as long as the whole thing isn't contaminated. It's not a good idea though. It will spread alot of spores everywhere. It took about a week to colonize the straw.

I've got 3 colonized jars of ecuador left. I'm heating up water to pasteurize now. While it's cooling down, i'm gonna run to walmart and find a good tub. I probably won't use a whole bale of straw this time. I want the whole thing to colonize in about 3-4 days. I want to get a good flush again. Lol. Do you add lime to your pasteurizing straw. I was thinking about adding a teaspoon of hi-yield to the soak water.

I haven't even used straw yet, too much trouble to blend it up to a decent size.
Would adding lime to straw be necessary? I don't imagine it would be very acidic to start with.

Straw is actually a very good substrate to work with. You don't have to shred it up if you buy the bales from michaels.
I've just read up on lime baths with straw a little.

Alright. These bastards didn't print well off the second flush. I have 4 prints left. The next 4 posts asking for them, gets them.

Looks like a nice lil project I bought the same lime from a local nursery in hope to get into casings. I couldn't find straw around here so I just picked up some coir for bulk. What kind of store is Michaels?

Nice job. Hopefully your next grow will give you even better results. At least you didn't have a grow like my last, and not even have a single pin sprout due to contams. Grats!

Yes, it's a craft store. I am out of prints at this time. Will have more coming though. I soaked this bastard for 24 hours, then drilled a hole in the bottom to drain the water. There are still tons of aborts on the top, and the casing layer looks compacted because it was soaking. Should flip this thing over and re-case? Or let it fruit the way it is.
