Test to see if your substraite is to dry etc?

Ive steamed my substraite, how can I check if its too dry or too wet inside? I dont want to open it in case of contamination.

Steamed it? You mean boiled i hope. I hope you boiled your sub, *INSIDE* you jars. And *DO NOT* open them. If you followed the recipe right, you shouldnt be worrying about these things. Now if you added a cup or 2 of water extra because it didnt "look" right you just made yourself some problems you could have avoided. Plus stop being so paranoid.
