and when do they become merely psychological pain? Saunas, I mean sweat lodges, fasting, lying on beds of nails, near death experience.... what is the tipping point? This is especially a question for Hue because he made the point in the sweat lodge thread.

I remember reading somewhere that after Buddha endured much suffering by choice, he realized that the suffering was all for not.

I went 4 hours without snacking. That seemed to be a limit.
There is no way to codify as people may undergo the exact same circumstance and come out with totally different experiences.
For a recent book on a first hand experience, check out the excellent 'Between a Rock and a Hard Place' or the decades' old 'Alive'.

Intent is the key me thinks and some luck and skill and throw in a little accident.

When do extreme physical conditions become a spiritual experience
It is my understanding that this is when, in theory, potent endogenous consciousness altering cocktails are released in your brain. Perhaps its only psychological pain with inconsistent results or inability to make use of said experience, or some related problem or confusion.

I agree with Ice. It all depends upon the mind set of the experiencer.
-------------------- "A warrior is a hunter. He calculates everything. That's control. Once his calculations are over, he acts. He lets go. That's abandon. A warrior is not a leaf at the mercy of the wind. No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

Intent plays a role but it also has to do with the chemicals that are released in the brain.

Intent releases those chemicals.

When do extreme physical conditions become a spiritual experience
when we forget
and when do they become merely psychological pain?
when we remember
i like to think of it as entering a receptive state of mind that is flowing inwards and absorbing, and breaking free from the outward spiraling flow of past mental and emotional patterns, and habit. so many pathways inwards, yet so many distractions.

because of how we react to the experience
because of how we react to chemicals in the brain
because of how chemicals in the brain react to other brain chemicals
none of these responses really satisfy me
its like asking "why does the ball bounce?" for the answer, "because it is bouncy."

Why does the ball bounce?? Cause you threw it at the wall. That's what it does. Balls.

Bouncing off a wall or ceiling guarantees adequate rebound. You might even catch it. Up from the floor the ball fights GRAVITY and never gets back to the height it started at. Unless you really are pissed and you try to throw through the floor. You know, to see if you can penetrate through to the 'other side.' Then the ball bounces all the way back up to the ceiling. And possibly damages a tile, or something.

Well shit, when it rains I have to get a bucket. When the sun is out I need an umbrella. And at night the dark pours in.

This is kinda gruesome, but is relevant. I read a story once about a guy who got gang raped 45 times his frist night in prison. During it, he describes how he enters into some different state and has all sorts of personal and spiritual realizations, whilst being raped that it. He said the he could feel the energy of the men flowing through him also, maybe his body responded to his terrible condition with psychedelics?
-------------------- "A human being is part of the whole, called by us 'Universe'; a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely but striving for such achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security." Albert Einstein
