So I've really been digging bluegrass lately, and was wondering if some of you fine folks could give me some recommendations on people to check out!

Larry Sparks and the Lonesome Ramblers:
The Soggy Bottom Boys (from Oh Brother Where Art Though):
New Grass Revival:
The only newer stuff I can think of is Yondermountain String Band, Railroad Earth, and Trampled by Turtles.

Yonder Mountain String Band is very cool for a jamgrass band, if you can find anything live from them, it is the best. Anything with David Grisman (mandolin) is also great. Bela' Fleck, Tony Rice, Doc Watson, John Hartford, Emylou Harris, Alison Krauss and Jerry Douglas are some good names to look for. Left Hand String Band, Acoustic Allstars, Strength in Numbers, Superpickers and Railroad Earth, are a few bands to get you started. I am a firm believer that anything live is usually much better than studio recordings and this holds true to bluegrass also. Look for the live stuff and you will find a much better listening experience. You can find some of these bands on bt.etree.org if you can download with bit torrent. Also look for performances from the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, There are usually some fantastic bands that attend them. If you are in the northeast, you could look into the Greyfox Festival in New York, I believe it is held around mid july. Its all Bluegrass and has some great names. Hope this helps. Enjoy. Peace.

don't forget Flatt and Scruggs and David Grisman and Jerry Garcia's Pizza Tapes
as far as new bluegrass, you should definitely check out the Yonder Mountain String Band. they're one of my favorite bluegrass bands, ever. and Railroad Earth. they are extremely bad ass; and a little more "classic" bluegrass than yonder mountain. Rollin' In The Hay is another great band. and the Nashville Super Pickers are pretty cool too! Bluesky Undergrass!

:edit: nice recomendations creekfreek. I almost forgot about Strength In Numbers for a second. I'm positive there is more than I am forgetting about. I'll chime in once I think of some more.
Here's a really bad ass Yonder Mountain song

Thanks for the tips, guys!
Got a lot of names here, but I'm having a bit of trouble finding torrents for a lot of these. I'll have to try creekfreek's page...
I guess I'm looking more at newer stuff. I like more upbeat music with not as much twang. I like YMSB and Trampled by Turtles already, and saw a band called Pertineer Sandstone (sp?) and they were just awesome.

That snake oil video was pretty cool!
I can hardly find any of these bands to download, and what I can find is in funky .flac format and labeled all weird.

Ya, that's usually the format you find live stuff in. You can alway convert them to mp3s or whatever format is "cool enough" for you.

It's not that it's not "cool enough" for me, I just don't like having a 3 minute song take up 40MB of hard disk space.

I haven't had issues with hard drive space in years, but whenever I do, I throw something like that on a cd (or dvd) and come back for it when it comes back to being something I'm in the mood for.
Bluegrass hits me hard for about 2 weeks every year.

Definitely YMSB, they are amazing. But I would have to say for more of a psychedelic Jam band type bluegrass, I would go with String Cheese Incident. They have been playing at telluride for a while now. Sucks they broke up last year though.

Old and In The Way should be able to be found on dimeadozen if you are a member,
Leftover Salmon..... http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=Leftover%20Salmon
Ralph Stanley... http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=510491
The pizza tapes are a couple of tapes of a recording of Jerry Garcia, David Grisman and I believe Tony Rice. The story goes that the tapes where sitting on the counter in David Grismans house and the pizza delivery guy stole them and got them out into the tape trading community. A while later someone turned Grisman on to the tapes and he got pissed so he remastered them and released them on his label. And here is a link to them, if you have a demonoid account. http://www.demonoid.com/files/details/1468268/8566112/

I'd just like to spout that, in spite of my inability to find most of these suggestions, I fucking love torrents.
Being able to go through huge compilations and just pick and choose the songs you want kicks ass.

Here is a really good Yonder Show I was at. My first time seeing them. There is an awesome bass solo somewhere in the first couple of songs.
The guy whistling a lot was one of my friends:)

This song is freaking amazing.
I got to see it live, listen to it in it's entirety, it will blow you away.
The bass solo is sick!

I like a lot of david grisman, peter rowan, and vassar clements stuff. Although, they all come together for old and in the way.

Calamity's waiting for a way to get to her
Rosy red and electric blue
I bought you a paddle for your paper canoe
Say you'll come back when you can
Whenever your airplane happens to land
Maybe I'll be back here too
It all depends on what's with you

You should look into some of the David Grisman and Jerry Garcia stuff. It was magical when those two played together.

I havent been able to find it but, I heard a few tracks from David Lee Roth's CD "Strummin' With The Devil". Its pretty damn good for a rocker playing bluegrass. If anyone has a link to download it, that would be fantastic.
