Oysters on plain cardboard

my first successful oysters!
i had four quarts of WBS spawn that i decided to experiment with. i ripped up a bunch of corrugated cardboard boxes and newspaper, pasteurized, and mixed in the WBS. i kept the laundry basket outdoors in a trashbag for around two weeks, checking periodically. i skipped a couple days and found them fruiting like mad inside the bag with no FAE, and i had to pull them out into hot, dry weather. i kept them under the deck and sprayed with a hose before and after i got back from work, but i thought for sure they were goners.... but today we had some nice rain with foggy weather all day, and they loved it. hopefully it will rain again tonight.

Congratulations!
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle I always throw whatever boxes I use when putting together beds into the bed too
You should try this again without pasteurizing the cardboard to see if it makes a difference
I like you avatar, too

How did you go about pasteurizing the cardboard?
Also, what do you plan to do with those yummy oysters?

to pasteurize the cardboard i simply threw it all into a large rubbermaid and poured a few pots' worth of boiling water on top. i had a meat thermometer that i jammed into the center of it all so i could watch the temps. after about 4 or 5 full pots, there was enough water to completely submerge all the cardboard and paper, and the temp was sitting at a perfect 170F. I let it sit for a couple hours before squeezing the water out by hand and throwing it into the laundry basket along with the WBS.

I see 18 wheeler trucks all the time on the highway hauling full loads of baled up cardboard and newsprint. I'm assuming they're going to recycling plants, but with the cost of fuel now, and the further impact on the environment, I think local mushroom farmers could more effeciently use this material to grow oyster mushrooms commercially. I've finally got some land up in the mountains with room to experiment. Whenever I get settled in, this is one of my projects to tackle. RR

Would mushrooms grown on substrate such as cardboard have any nutritional value though?

The nutritional value of the mushrooms is not going to vary that much based on its substrate*. I would only worry about the subtrate introducing contaminants not recommended for human consumption. This information could probably be obtained manufacturer or distributor of the substrate in its original form.
(* some values of the fats, proteins, carbonhydrates, minerals and vitamins will vary from batch to batch, but they will all have beneficial nutritional value of some type. Also keep in mind you can always supplement your bulk substrates.)

Surely growing mushrooms on a nutritionally diverse substrate will results in mushrooms with a higher nutritional value, than growing mushrooms on processed cullulose?

These are lignin-consuming fungi, they eat wood. Cardboard is made of wood. I don't think the nutritional value would be any different by weight. I might expect less yield of them, but what do others think?

I'm aware they are saprophytic, but wood has not been processed like cardboard. But yes, some other opinions would be great.

I agree with MycoAu. I think the mushrooms would still contain pretty much the same nutritional value but probably give fewer fruits.
But hey when it's all said an done that newspaper would be some killer soil. You could get rid of waste, produce healthy topsoil, and produce food.
Mushrooms are great.
Has anyone ever done a newspaper bed? I wonder how well that would work? edit: A Log would probably do alright.

I'm not saying that using a more nutrious substrate won't result in more nutrious mushrooms. I'm saying that the difference is going to be negligible for almost any purpose other than strict analysis. The mushroom, when supplied with a few basic materials and nutrients, will be capable of utilizing its own metabolic pathways to synthesize a good portion of the deficient materials. Obviously, it can't do this for everything or for very large deficiencies, but that's not really a concern unless you trying to cultivate on something like sugar-water where there is LITERALLY only two chemicals available. Plants and fungi are amazing organisms capable of quite extraordinary processes. Give them some credit, but be aware of their weaknesses.
Almost any bulk substrate that you can find written about on this website will provide enough nutrients for a bulk grow a time or two through. I would, however, switch substrates every couple of grows if you are cloning from each generation to the next instead of utilizing a master culture.
