sleepy said: technically, they didn't have an impact on anyone. they rocked, and people might try to copy them, but there only effect would have been making people try and copy them. you can't say that they caused any musicians to be better than they would have if the beatles hadn't existed. everyone is only as good as their ability+practice. i mean, unless the beatles went around teaching people how to play... that would be a different story.
i guess they could have inspired people to experiment, but no bands have been as good as them. i just don't see the cause/effect relationship here
they were no doubt the most influential band of all time. If anyone can think of a bigger one (in modern pop music) I'd be happy to debate.

These are the kind of threads I love!
The Beatles are (were) the 8th wonder of the world.
Their best (most psychedelic) music was "Sargent Pepper's..." and "Magical Mystery Tour" of which I listen to the best of EVERY time I trip on shrooms.
Favorite song - "Penny Lane"... It makes me feel SO GOOD!!!
Rock on!!!

From my point of view ( I write and record music. my biggest passion) they revolutionized the recording studio as an instrument within itself. When they were doing some of their craziest stuff it was with only 4 tracks, all the effects were done by hand. Its absolutely amazing. if nowadays we want to add delay, distortion, echo, reverse, cut, splice, sample, loop etc etc. its all at the click of a button. Listening to the beatles while keeping in mind everything you hear is physical alterations and tricks done with tape is just mindboggling.
funfact- the first reverbs were actual rooms. The tracks were bussed to the speaker that would play what you added the reverb to, on the other side of the room was a microphone to pick up the sound +the ambience of the room

the Beatles helped teach me to play, certainly... and I think the original poster (Hi up therE!) would agree that just by jamming out to their tunes, one can learn a lot about music playing. could I have played guitar without first listening to John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison do it so beautifully together? might my sense of rhythm not be slightly different after hearing Ringo Starr's indescribable and unique style? would I be a different person if Lennon were still alive?
perhaps...
as an added inspiration, spur of the moment, I'm attaching a pretty lousy recording of a song I wrote tonight, called KING I! any feedback is appreciated.

All of the above is so very true. Also... Somewhere on the web, there's a posting of "mistakes in Beatles songs" some of which were never noticed until years after the albums were published, others were left in DELIBERATELY.
Another thing... Listen carefully to "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" (especially when tripping) and you'll notice that Paul's bass is a 1/4 beat off-time!! A VERY TRIPPY thing to do.

not to mention that the vocals were recorded to a slightly slowed down music tracks, resulting in his voice sounding slightly chipmunky...almost not noticeable on a truly conscious level...to be completely honest i dont know if thats true or not, just what I always thought it sounded like
god what I wouldn't do to be Sir George Martin

I don't think I'd wanna "be" him, but I sure wouldn't mind having his money, respect and fame.

maybe not be him, but rather to have the opportunity to work so closely and often with the beatles and be widely regarded as one of the most influential producers along with phil spector.

Yes. It would be wild to be able to say "I had an influence on The Beatles' music and helped make them the 8th wonder of the world." That would be VERY cool!

Have you heard the outtake of that where Paul's laughing hysterically? I can't listen to that song without smiling.
Man, I love the Beatles. Definitely my favorite band of all time, hands down.
