Every drug does it differently, or unlock different circuits in your brain.
But I do believe that every drug perhaps "unlocks" different circuits (parts of the brain.) Perahps once we do a certain "drug" ( I hate that word) a few times and become familiarized with it's effects, and "where" it takes us, we can get back to that place easier when taking the "drug" again. Sometimes we can go "back" to those places in our mind and imagination without even taking the drug.
This does not mean that every place a drug "takes" you will be a pleasant one. Intent, along with set and setting are very important. Not just set and setting.
I believe Timothy Leary's Nine Circuit Brain discussed a phenomena like this, but I moved, and lost my book before I finished reading it. Damn it.

Their religion bans them from drinking alcohol, doesn't it? Does this apply to all narcotics?

Prolly not, since they are one of the worlds largest producers of opium and Hashish.

Yes they are not allowed to use narcotics by the Islam. But that doesn't stop them. Almost every religion bans killing, and most religions have a violent past present.
