Friends and reading

I asked all my friends when was the last time they read a book from start to finish that didn't include being an assignment for a class.
They either said high school or junior high.
How sad is that? I am almost done finishing my third book of the year.

I never understand why those who read think it's "sad" that others don't. I truly find little to no enjoyment in reading, and RARELY do it. In fact, this past fall may have been the first time I've read a book on my own since elementary school. Read a few Bukowski books. I've tried reading Fight Club, On The Road, and a few others people always say I'd like and I just don't find enjoyment in it.
I'm currently very slowly making my way through Fats Domino's biography, but that's more because the subject interests me and I want the knowledge, but I don't think I'll even make it through.
I'd rather watch a movie than read, but I don't do that too often anymore either.

well...I just don't read books because the internet is more convenient. I rather read random shit, news, articles, history stuff on the internet. I don't really get enjoyment out of readings books to experience some kind of story...I watch movies for that. I like to read to learn, and instead of buying books to do that, I can just read the internet.

I love books, and language in general. I tend to like people tend to read a lot.
I try not to look down on people who don't read. Different strokes for different folks.

i don't really have anything against people who read books...but I don't see why people who do read books would have a problem with people who do not, just seems kind of elitist.
And what does someone giving you shit have to do with the country you live in, I am 100% sure there are douche bags in foreign countries as well, its not an American thing, its a human thing.

The overall direction mainstream culture has taken in America recently.
Have you been to many other country's? Things are quite different.

Things yes, but the people are strangely similar if you look closely.

I wish more of my friends read. But I don't give a shit if people I do not know do not. I simply just do not care at all.
I'm currently finishing up Lamb, by Christopher Moore which will be my 5th or 6th book I've finished this year.

I used to read a book a week when I was younger. Now I can barely read magazine articles. Whenever I pick up a book I can read a whole page on autopilot while thinking about something else and when I hit the bottom of the page I can't remember a single thing that I just read.
I just blank the fuck out while my eyes are following all the words.

I hate to break it to you, but humans in general are retarded. Theres not some geographical line where doucherism and ass holes stop.

Then a majority of fiction wouldn't exist if we all read for knowledge. My point was I don't enjoy reading the book, but I like knowing what it has to offer.

People yes, but the general directions our cultures have taken are drastically different. Fame, and status have become the american dream.

so someone made fun of you for reading because they want fame and status? That doesn't make sense.

What seems sad to me is not that people stop reading, but that they stop learning. There are many different ways to learn, but it seems that the majority thinks that their education stops when they leave school.
