Hard Drives

I don't know why, but it seems that most hard drives I encounter end up hating me for some reason.
I don't put my system under much stress, just occasional downloads, internet surfing and games like DoD:S and TF2 (for which it was built). I use Win XP, FireFox, Norton AntiVirus and AdAware, uTorrent for downloads (usually private trackers).
My current setup is: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Manchester 2.0GHz CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 2 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ST3120813AS 120GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive ASUS A8N-SLI 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard XFX PV-T71G-UDF7 GeForce 7900GT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 LOGISYS Computer PS550ABK 550Watts ATX12V Power Supply
I ran both HDs simultaneously, but not on RAID. Just dual disks. Disk 1 is partitioned into a smaller partition for the Windows install and a larger Games and other stuff partition. Disk 2 was equally partitioned into Torrents and into Music.
Disk 2 no longer works. If I have it connected, the whole system boots really slowly, always goes to check disk, and freezes after a few minutes. It does not have the click of death. I have run Seatools in DOS and Windows (while Windows would still actually run with the HD connected). In Seatools for DOS, I run the Long Test and have it fix errors it finds. But it seems to have no effect.
I had not dropped the HD, nor mistreated it in any way. I might try the freezer trick, but I usually do not succeed with that method.
I have had other HDs that cease functioning for no apparent reason. In my previous setup, I had a Western Digital 80gb HD that got the clicks and I lost all that precious data.
On my current setup, I've lost many thousands of songs (though oddly not my entire library), torrents, and a ton of great porn I know I will probably never access it again. For example, I have Deep Purple's entire discography, but when my HD started fucking up and I had to move my stuff, it was all there minus one album (the Burn album, which is my favorite DP album )
Does this sort of thing happen to many hard drives? It seems like every hard drive I've ever had (save the one I'm operating on currently) has ceased to function after a period of time, and it's really starting to piss me the fuck off.
Is there anything that can prevent this from happening again? I've already bought an external HD and backed up most of my precious stuff onto it, but even that's not garunteed.

Hard drives like to fail because they have sensitive moving parts. This makes it easy for something to go wrong. However, if you are seeing failure after failure, then there might be a problem that is causing the problem.
The biggest killer of internal hard drives is heat. (Dropping is the biggest killer of external/laptop drives.) Hard drives put out a lot of heat and hard drive cages inside of computer cases tend to pack the drives together tightly. I like to keep an empty slot between each of my drives to improve air flow. I also like to use heat sinks to mount the drives in 5.25 bays. I also like to run a dedicated fan (or two) over the hard drives to help keep them cool.
I would also replace my power supply if I kept losing hard drives.
Finally, I have gotten a bad lot of hard drives (from Seagate, a .l.o.n.g. time ago) where every single hard drive in the lot went bad. They all had consecutive (or nearly consecutive) serial numbers. Luckily, they failed fairly quickly and were under warranty.

Check both your powersupply and your motherboard. My old motherboard continually destroyed CD and DVD drives. :O Oh and do a thorough virus scan, boot sector and everything.

I know that seagate used to have a 5-year warranty, I think they still do, might want to check that out, if you haven't already.

Unfortunately, Seagate makes it as difficult as possible to file a claim.

On external ones, seagate wouldn't even back it up after 6 months. Tried selling me data recovery. Do your self a favor and don't buy seagate or maxtor. The first external drive I bought was maxtor it lasted a whole week. Luckly the store took that back. Maxtor is know owned by seagate also!

hmmm...seagate hdd have been nothing but good for me, have yet to have one go out...knock on wood.
I've had a couple for over 6 years too. I also have an external by them and it works fine as well, got it for christmas a couple years ago.
Personally I have only used Seagate and Western Digital Hard Drives, and have only had one WD go out, but it was really old. I also hear the new Samsung HDD are pretty good.
Main thing here, backup your data, no matter what kind of hard drive it is on.

Buy from Newegg and you can guarantee good service. I don't buy Seagate anymore, but if i were to, I would go to www.newegg.com. They always hold their end if the deal up on faulty items.
I sound like an ad.
