I'll sometimes stutter when I'm either nervous or excited. It seems my poor little mouth can't keep up with the rush of thoughts my mind spits out. A recent class involving some speech making helped this out a bit though.

I have alway's stuttered, not bad but sometimes it is hard for people to understand what I am trying to say. My stuttering is more like Psilo25's. My mind is so full of thoughts I just cannot get them to words fast enough!

when i was a kid (~3-4 years old) i started stuttering after a tramatic event (someone tried to kidnap me) and i attended speech therapy for a year or so. then one day the person who was responicible for my attempted kidnapping went to jail and i stopped stuttering immeadiately. weird how the mind works counterproductively sometimes.

Try studying techniques like slow prolonged speech. You can research it on the net but the essence of it is breathing from the diaphragm, gentle onset of vibration in the vocal cords, light contacts when forming words, prolonging words and running each word into the next - whilever your vocal cords are vibrating you can't stutter. I had a friend at University who stammered and this was the technique that gave him some relief. The course he used was "Self-therapy for stutterers" by Malcolm Fraser. I think it's available online for free somewhere.

i've always thought that people with extremely fast mental processes often stutter.
they're the kind of people that comprehend and process massive streams of information at much higher rates and for longer periods of time than the average person. the problem comes when they try to organize thoughts to be communicated verbally. they try to verbalize as fast as they can visualize, or, process information -and thats just not possible. they actually have to consciously slow down they're thoughts enough to more closely match the rate at which they can speak...

I don't think there's a correlation. I've known brilliant people as well as dullards who stuttered.

The cause isn't known. There are various risk indicators such as it running in families and usually occurring in males. Stutterers have no unique character traits, all kinds of people are affected.
