ID REQUEST It looks like Tricholoma portentosum, but most of the info on that species is from europe. Any thoughts?

Habitat: soil under mixed conifers, dense mulch of pine needles.
Gills: white, free not free I dunno.
Stem: white, fibrous, hollow near the cap becoming not hollow towards base of stipe.
Cap: gray, not slimy, the texture of microfiber upholstery.
Spore print color: white on aluminum foil.
Bruising: slight yellowing where cut.
Location: SE Michigan

Definately NOT boletes. What's the spore print colour?

spore prints are WHITE.
Can I get some of the mushroom gurus to holler in on this one? I'm trying to put these in a tasty dish for this weekend.

That's a tough one, especially considering the size of the photos. 600x450 is a pretty good size. I have 2 species in mind, but can't quite tell because of the small photographs.

I don't think its Tricholoma portentosum because that species has a yellowish stem and the cap texture looks different.
How about Tricholoma marquettense?

Have you tried Michael Kuo's Tricholoma key?

I have used that key, and it seems that without microscope work I am going to have to put this in the "Mealy Gray Tricholoma" category.
It is not pardinum.
I sampled a corner of a cap. Cucumbers. Cap fibers are gray to gray-brown, being more dense in the center of the pileus all other flesh on the mushroom is white, with the gills being slightly offer white.
If I could find a list of species that have been recorded in SE Michigan, I'd be in better shape to ID these.
So far, T.myomyces and T.pseudoterreum are the closest, with T.atrodiscum, conicogriseum, and lutemaculosum being close as well.

You may be able to check with the local herbariums.
The cucumber smell is common in Tricholoma, that should help narrow it down some.

T. myomyces was one of my guesses. The other was Hygrophorus camarophyllus, which is starting to fruit in your area. But the gills aren't as thick and waxy looking on those specimens of your's as they are on H. camarophyllus. It also has a tar smell to it.
