mono buckets

well kind of. i came across a florists shop giving away these buckets and remembered an earlier thread, that i can't remember the title of, but thought they could be useful so took a couple home and proceded to mess with them. i decided it would be easier to make slots rather than the large holes normally used in a mono. made the slots using an old solder gun, you could use a screwdriver heated on a gas stove.

buckets are 10" x 8.5" x11"
put 3" of horse/ coir / coffee grounds bulk sub mix in the bottom, mixed in a 380g jar of colonised wbs and covered the bucket with clingfilm for myc run. later cased with a potting soil /verm / coir mix.

not a great pinset, but never mind. here they are a little later.

and a few fruits.

oh, if anyone was wondering, i replaced the polifil normaly used in a mono with a breathable layer obtained from tyvek housewrap.

i found that if i boil a square of housewrap for a few minites it seperates into three distinct layers as in the square on the left of pic. the middle square is a very strong material, i use it as the filter (between lid and jar) on grain jars. the square on the right is the tissue like material that is taped to the mono buckets in above pic. first flush harvest from the two buckets is 658g , so far. i think i'm hooked.

I've always been curious about trying something like that! You can always find stuff like this free/cheap, and any money you can save along the way is a plus

i like them a lot for their simplicity, and not having to mess with the whole rehydrating perlite mess. a few shrooms were inaccessible but had to be got out,so... put a clean bucket of the same dimentions into the harvested bucket and turn upside down. a pic to help>

gently lift off the bucket that is now on top>

pick off aborts and generaly tidy up the substrate, clean out the first bucket and replace. when you want to rehydrate the sub simply leave the second bucket in place (right way up ) while you pour tap water down between the two buckets, a few inches of water in the second bucket is all you need to keep the substrate submerged.

five days later... both "mono buckets" are on their 2nd flush. here's the best one,a couple of days ahead of the other.

looks like they need a good misting despite being dunked.
