Last year, as well as this year, I told everyone I could I was canadian. The only place it didn't really work was France. I also met other american backpackers last year that did go to the length of sewing the canadian flag on their bags. I did not. I believe I had an easier time pretending to be canadian, as everyone felt bad for us having to deal with america, the american gov't, and american ignorance.
I have heard of Americans using this "trick" for a long time...it just seems logical. It's no secret that the U.S. is not the most popular country in many places, whereas Canadians seem to be given alot more leeway...anyways...this is sort of off the topic, so I won't comment on this anymore, other than stating is a common practice amoung Americans travelling abroad to say that they are Canadian.
