Help with ID, possible oyster relative ?

When I smelled this specimen it seemed to remind me of the wonderful smell of oyster mushrooms I have found a few times previous. Yet, these are different, not attached to wood. So some ID help would be appreciated. Cuz the smell is enticing to me to eat them. Really tho, I am not a dare devil, so must ID.
habitat: foothills of the applachians, mixed pine and broad leaf forest. Late may after tons of rain. Substrait: Dark earth and wet leaves (not attached to wood at all) Spore Print: White but there seems to be a barely noticable yellow tint (maybe just moister stain)
Cap: looks like its on its way to a funnel shape
Gills: White and crowded. Please tell me - look at photo - is this considered 'free' or 'sinuate notched'
Stem: feels a bit hollow
very good pic attached.

I suspect that is the Platterful Mushroom (Tricholompsis platyphylla), which I have recently encountered in the woods. I haven't eaten them and another Shroomery poster has claimed that they are poisonous. The National Audubon Society field guide says it is "edible when very young" but is known to cause gastric upsets in people.

seems like an excellent possible match. The only thing is I don't know if the tricholompsis platyphylla has gills that are this crowded. Either way, its pointing to a non edible, I won't try it.

This field guide says the gills are "almost distant," which may very well be what's in the pic provided, though I admit those gills are on the close-to-crowded side.
I agree that those specimens are probably nothing good to eat.

To answer OP's question about the gills, they appear to be either adnexed or notched (if attached) or free; I'd need the cap in my hand or a more-detailed picture to tell.

I will add that they do smell darn good. Sweetly fragrant, and a slight good hint of typical 'mushroom'. The caps are not greasy at all. Even after being exposed to a lot of rain/moisture.

OK, I'm certain those gills are attached, probably in adnexed fashion.
I've just consulted various online mushroom sources, and it appears that "Platterfuls" are being pictured as both crowded and distant-gilled mushrooms...funny. Perhaps there are multiple species masquerading as the Platterful?
Check the bottom pic on this site: http://www.wildmanstevebrill.com/Mushrooms.Folder/Platterful.html

Tricholomopsis platyphylla is now known as Megacollybia platyphylla. Looks like a good match.

The last printing of my best field guide is 2006. Did the mycologists just decide on a whole slew of name changes for various mushroom species?

It was moved from Tricholomopsis into Megacollybia in 1972 by FrantiĊĦek Kotlaba and Zdeněk Pouzar. Perhaps the mycologist who published your field guide didn't speak czech.

Yeah, a lot of the authors of recently published field guides don't care to keep up with science. Out of curiosity, how does the field guide place the "Inky Caps", which genera??
