Why is this enough?

Hello, I have spent the last 3 days reading all I could on this awesome site about straw and how it's used as a bulk substrate. Now, I understand that it's used instead of, say, brf as a bulk substrate because brf would take forever to colonize in large volumes.

But I keep reading that straw doesn't contaminate easily, and that in fact it only requires pasteurization and not sterilization. My question is this: if pasteurization only is needed, then I guess it doesn't contain many nutrients. But then how come mycelium colonizes it so fast and it ends up increasing yields immensely? This seems contradictory, unless the straw's main benefit lies somewhere other than its celullose content. Surely it can't up yields so much simply because of the moisture it provides right? It must contain moisture and many nutrients, but then why would pasteurization suffice?

On a side note, I was looking at the ingredients of Shredded Wheat and it's 100% whole grain wheat and BHT. So I guess that couldn't be used instead of straw because of the BHT. Other than that, though, it would surely contain all the nutrients found in wheat straw. So anyway I will just get some long grass stalks from the park behind my house and try that, since I cannot find wheat straw.

Straw is actually very low in nutrients. But it does increase the yeild significantly due to the moisture content. It only requires pasturation, but it does contaminate a lot eaiser than say poo.

This is for the sole purpose of information only. Not intended for use in the actual manufacture of known drugs.

The keyword is BULK. Straw gives good yields becasue one tends to use big amounts of it since it ?s cheap and easy to conditionate(only pasteurize as oposed to sterilize for more nutritous substrates).

If you were to use the same dry amount of rye grain and the same dry amount of straw, the rye grain will give you more mushrooms.
