I am using a mix of ground quinoa(about 1 TBS) ground bird seed(don't remember) brown rice flour(like a quarter cup) flax seed(1 TBS) and vermiculite like a quarter cup, and water added to reach desired consistency, I am getting the largest and most fruits I ever have, it's awesome, I wish I had written it down, but I believe it is because of the quinoa... Thanx mycomountain and Oleander. Is there anyone else out there with any votes as to the best substrate or substrate mixtures? Also, Oleander how do you grind up those quinoa seeds? Those little boogers are pretty sturdy. ------------------ Trying to rationalize with an irrational person, is in itself irrational!

I used the alien tek and got the best results ever. I used Quinoa, Flax seed, Finch seed, Brown rice. My jars colonized 100% in ten days flat, awesome fat fruits. Definetly the best substrate I've ever had.

I use a nifty little coffee grinder that grinds with a stone instead of a blade like most of them, I haven't found anything that it won't grind... Oleander------------------ I'm only two people away from having a menage a trois!

Compost, worked so well for me thay I never strayed - it is easy to make and use, seems very contamination resistant and produces huge caps for ages in good yield.

yes, Benzl what is in your compost, and how do you prepare it for growing mushrooms? I just innoculated 10 jars today with 1/2 brown rice and 1/2 quinoa. Hopefully I'll get some good results. ------------------ Trying to rationalize with an irrational person, is in itself irrational!

My last substrate was:1 Cup of Niger Seed 1 Cup of Rye Malt 1 Cup of Brown Rice Boiled in 6 cups water for 30 mins. This allows it to take up all the water. I then took a mixture of 1/2 vermiculite and 1/2 millet flour and mixed it into the boiled ingredients until it reached the proper consistancy. This was spooned into 1/2 pint jars and pressure cooked for 1 hour. Put down some Treasure Coast and some Pan Cyans on Saturday. Haven't check for growth yet. This is my first whack at Pan Cyans. HWW

Hi Benzl, I've heard the same things about compost. Compost has more resistance against contaminates compared to straw, but straw colonizes faster. In my opinion if you do either one correctly you shouldn't get any contaminates...but as we all know, no one plans on getting hit with a contaminate:-) As for the "compost corner" could you possibly give us a link? Right now I'm up in the air wether or not to pasturize my compost by steaming it for an hour or so, pressure cooking it, or sterlizing it in the microwave for 25 minutes. Thanks again
