1. Run LEDs under the boards hanging over each tub. 2. Put 2' shoplights (if possible) under the boards over each tub. (This option could become a bit more pricey)

Fish tank lights. Or rope lights. Nice setup btw.

That might be tough unless he has plexi in the lids. Those tubs aren't clear. Or even monotubs yet.

He is obviously planning, which is good. So many people just don't plan out their shit and come here for answers afterwards. He obviously knows he doesn't have monotubs yet, and that he will need to make his lids clear in order to incorporate the source of lights he chooses...
I would go with the LEDs.

Nonsense. LED rope lights can be on for DAYS and not even be warm to the touch. Incandescent rope lights however do get very hot.

Battery powered LED's all the way. super stealth(can be attached to the under side of yer lid, no need to cut up yer container. no heat and no bullshit cords either.

where you guys findin those LED chords at? all the ones ive seen like that do get a little hot, maybe their incandescent then though.
I was gonna say 1foot low-watt compact flourescents taped under the lid with a hole drilled out in the box for the chord. May be a little pricier though.
