Ok, now I know that at least 93% of you guys are from the USA, but about 5% are from the UK.

if you are going to do the clickable maps and stuff will you be doing them or anything else for the UK aswell? :confused:

I hope once your finnished updating you at least have a nice little section were "us" from the UK can read and chat about Mushrooms to help each other out. :grin:

Well LittleHippy, the clickable maps, and linking everything into eachother, is a big undertaking..this whole mushroom hunting FAQ is a big project. One thing at a time :smile:

How i think it should work is;
Have a map of the U.S. & Canada,
Each state and province is clickable,
Then lets say, you click on, Nova Scotia..
After you click on Nova Scotia,
Then you get the listing of all the psychoactive mushrooms that are known to grow there,
Then, you can click onto each individual mushroom to get more info,
So, in this case, for Nova Scotia, you click on the mushroom Psilocybe semilanceata..
Then you click on Psilocybe semilanceata and you are brought to another page,
The page has everything about that particular mushroom,
Pictures, Descriptions, and also several links of the great threads that we have had posted here,
Threads posted by Shroomerites..

I am living at the moment in an extremely rural area on the north west coast of Costa Rica I have personal experience with three mushroom species down here. One is a cubensis but it must be a different variety, it looks very different than most of the cubensis I have seen.
The other two species I have been unable to identify what species. I know they are Psilocybe's because they are coprophillic, black to dark blue spore prints and they stain blue. I have consumed all three types and they are definitely psilocybin containing!!
I live next to a coup[le dozev square miles of cow pastures so there is ample habitat. For identification I have been using a field guide by Paul Stamets "Psilocybin Mushrooms of the world"

If I could be of any help to the site I would love to!

Ok, so here are a few FAQ that are still unanswered, if anyone wants to contibute, please post the Q&A to these and other hunting related questions in the FAQ contributions forum.


How long do I have to wait after it rains to find mushrooms?
Can I take home cow dung from the field and get Shrooms to grow from it?
Do some farmers spray their fields with fungicides?
Do poisonous mushrooms grow in cow pastures and/or from cow dung?
Is every mushroom that stains blue a magic mushroom?
How do I ask a farmer if I can look for mushrooms on his property?
How do I take a spore print?

I think the "Find" page is a great place to improve the site. It's been lacking for sometime now. The clickable map sounds like a great idea if you ask me. A big picture of the world that when you click on a certain region, shows the different species that grow there naturally and possibly a list of 'find' reports. Especially perhaps a map that zooms in a little bit...

Please look at this page and give us your feedback. This is the old page that has been here for quite some time.

Is there anything we should remove, ADD, or what do you think for some suggestions on how to sprucen this page up?

My goals for that page is to have a world listing for all known active mushrooms, possibly even a clickable map to narrow down the regions etc....

I'm going to add a disclaimer that people have to view before proceeding to this page that explains the danger of mushroom hunting more clearly.

I also wanted to list each species and show pictures of each of them with brief descriptions... I will be using mjshroomers wisdom on this and with his permission hopefully a lot of the descriptions of each mushroom.

But what would you hunters like, don't let your imaginations stop you, anything is possible.

i too have the stamets guide, and have found it to be the best source (hard copy), that ive come across (any recommendations?) tho there are many areas that he does not cover (the new england area)... something similar to the map section and mushroom anatomy diagrams would be, in my opinion, ideal for first-timers, and vets, who tend to learn easier from visuals (no pun intended). simple, concise, pictures. all in all tho, im glad that this is being done, and if in any way i can help, im a pretty decent sketch artist, so... there you go.

When the guide says "introduced" what does this mean? I have introduced and successfuly fruited P. cubensis in Oregon, does this qualify?

I think it means it is not native, but was introduced and is growing successfully in several locations. Perhaps it?s even spreading.
At least I would understand it this way.

Joshua, Introduce species implies that it comes back every year and is now common in Oregon every year. They do not come back since they are a tropical and subtropical species.

As I posted images of them growing int he woods outdoors in Awashington, they will fruit if one dumps their awaurieum/terrarium into the topsoil in someones yard. But as I noted, they do not refruit the following years.

Otherwise thousands of perspective growers would have already accomplished this .

this is answered based on my cube hunting experience; hunting cowfields in louisiana.

Q: How long do I have to wait after it rains to find mushrooms?
A: Best rule of thumb is that you need to wait till after the next hot day. There will be a few during the rains or even before, but not enough to spend your time for. Basically, what you are looking for is the first hot sunny day after a rain. that night will be the best pickings. In some cases, the fields will be too soggy. These scenarios require patience. Assuming you get multiple sunny days after the rain, go every night to check if the field is dry enough to fruit some mushrooms. During hese trips to the field, you may find a few here and there. Remember where these singles are as theres a good chance the area will fruit abundantly after the field dries a little.

im not too sure about fungicides or poisonous mushrooms in the fields. any other questions you need answered?
