Hunters the Shroomery needs your advice.

We are now working on revamping the 'find' section of our website: www.shroomery.org/find Please look at this page and give us your feedback. This is the old page that has been here for quite some time. Is there anything we should remove, ADD, or what do you think for some suggestions on how to sprucen this page up? My goals for that page is to have a world listing for all known active mushrooms, possibly even a clickable map to narrow down the regions etc.... I'm going to add a disclaimer that people have to view before proceeding to this page that explains the danger of mushroom hunting more clearly. I also wanted to list each species and show pictures of each of them with brief descriptions... I will be using mjshroomers wisdom on this and with his permission hopefully a lot of the descriptions of each mushroom. But what would you hunters like, don't let your imaginations stop you, anything is possible.

The Shroomery is set up in a way that someone who is a complete newbie can come to this site, research, and at least have a real good idea of what's going on, what's around them, what is and what isn't edible, and how to decifer among the different species surrounding them. Also, if they cant find out on their own, this forum is a goldmine; along with people who are kind enough to help us identify our findings.
The Shroomery is definately the best site I have found to date dealing with the topic of mushrooms. The information is here, the people are very educated on their hobby, or career as the case may be, and this is a pleasant environment to come to and search for truth and answers.
As far as the page is concerned I can't think of anything that could actually make it better. There are all the major, most important topics already there: Growing, Finding, Preserving, Glossary, Links, and Books. You can't really ask for or expect too much more, but a surprise is always nice.
The suggestion you mentioned about the clickable map would definately be nice. As you said that would narrow down a lot of information for the readers. I hope other people can come up with some great suggestions, but as for me, I'm happy with the way it is.
Keep up the great work!

You could mabey add a version of the paper by MJ, Gartz and Guzman antitled "A North American Distribution of Psychocative Fungi" for other continents. I know the paper says that there's on comming but i haven't seen one so i'm assuming it isn't fineshed.
--------------------
Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

*throws his 2 cents* A 'clickable' map would be neat, with select regions to click on and find out what info has been posted about what shrooms are native. *flop*

i kinda feel sorry for those of you living in the usa, here in the uk it is legal to grow and possess fresh shrooms (and dry shrooms if they were dried by 'accident'.)

Ok, I've been waiting untill I had time to post my sugestions, and now is a good time, so here it goes.
1. Update mapping the mycelial network. This thing is way out of date. There are about 4-5 species of mushrooms native to Georgia that aren't on the list. And Panaeolus subbalteatus can be found in just about every state in the US.
2. If we do the clickable map(which is a great idea) we need to include the general habitat of where where to look for the mushrooms listed for that state. It really frustrates me when people look in the woods for active mushrooms, when the majority of them grow from manure in their state.
3. We need to list some of the non-active/poisonous look-a-likes that grow in the same habitat as active mushrooms. For example, The Green Spored Lepotia grows in the fields near Ps. Cubensis, and its poisonous.... Or Galerinas grow next to Ps cyans. We should inclue pictures, which shouldn't be hard to to because a lot of the mushrooms that grow near the active ones are very common.
4. Tell people when mushrooms grow(after rain, etc.) and when to look for them(night if stealth is needed. We also need to tell people *how* to hunt for them, for example, tell them not to use flash lights during a night hunt as it just draws attention to them.
5. Get rid of that god damned rumor about farmers feeding cattle anti-fungal foods or the rumor that if theres a salt lick present that mushrooms wont grow.
Thats all my brain storming for right now. I'm sure I'll have more ideas in the future, and I'll post them here when they come to me. If you need any help updating stuff, let me know and I'll help oot.

Heh... already thought of another thing that I forgot to add.
6. Explain to people that if they come to the board for identifcation, a picture is invaluable. If they don't have pictures, we need to tell them how to give an accurate description including: a. Habitat b. Characteristics of the gills(color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc) c. Measurements of cap and stem. d. Characteristics of the stem(color, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc) e. Characteristics of the cap(color, concical/spherical, convex/concave, etc) f. Spore print color(very important) g. Color that the mushroom briuses h. Scent of mushroom
7. This is one that I'd just personaly like to see, but its not crucial: Use correct grammar, none of that AOL babble crap(plz, mushies, will it mak mi hi?, iz it trip? thx, u guyz, etc.). People who sounds like intellectuals are more likly to get an educated, serious, intellectual answer.

Great stuff Gumby
Also what about a simple diagram of a mushroom to explain what a gill is, stem, cap, viscid pellicle etc...

I was thinking, this site is all about supplying people with the real information about mushrooms, and what mushrooms are all about. Why not have a section up somewhere on the site about the study of mycology. Talking about what mycology is all about, and links to different sites supplying informtion on the field of study as well. Then people that come here may go there and grow even more interested in mushrooms. I'm sure this site gets massives hits a day (by observing the activity of the forum). From all those hits we could possibly get other even more interested in the actual study instead of just the psycadelic experience.
