Spore Prints: They Are to Mycology What Bees Are to Flight?
    #8416982 - 05/18/08 04:04 PM (15 years, 10 months ago)

Ok i get the basic idea of how a print is made.

Cut a cap
Stick it in a jar or on foil with gills down
Let sit for 24 hours
Remove cap

I know there's quite a bit more to it but even with the parts that i've left out, it seems like it should never work.
Don't get me wrong, i know it does but...
It is impossible to grow (let alone move) mushrooms without them being introduced, at some point, to air with contamination in it. Unless you have a multi-million (billion?) dollar lab to do it in. But most of us are doing the work in our kitchens, bathrooms and closets and they are by no means sterile.

So how do you get a viable spore print without any unwanted spores mixed in since the cap itself is exposed to the atmosphere? Is it all luck?

I have read dozens of techniques on making spore prints and at some point in every single tek, you cut the cap, introduce it to a spore riddled environment for a period of time and then the print itself is introduced to the same environment for SOME period of time.

It boggles my mind.

Maybe i'm missing some secret step?

Maybe it's like honey bees...
The laws of modern physics would prove that the honey bee's body is too round and the wings too small for it to achieve flight... yet somehow it does with impressive results.

Anyway, i could use some help.

Thanks!

It's all about minimisation. Not all spores in the air are viable anyway. If you practise as many sterile and clean steps in the procedure as possible you should be fine. If your not, do agar work.

i agree i doesn't make since to me either. just for the simple fact that it is exposed to everything "shit, molds in the air, everything" you'd think every spore print would be bad and you have to clean it up with agar. but on the other hand of things if you treated like it was im sure there would be a lot more isolates grow going on in grow logs

And with the air they are exposed to, not everything is viable. Wild prints are of course a different matter, and you would undoubtedly have to isolate away from contaminants.
