lighting question
    #8410591 - 05/16/08 06:57 PM (15 years, 10 months ago)

Ive heard that 3-4 hours light per day is optimum, and Ive also heard 12 hours until pins form- Then some people say 12 hours is too much, with vague allusions that something anti-productive might happen... So my question is, what are the negative effects of too much lighting? I know that light helps initiate pinning, so I guess too little might effect that, but I havent read anything about what happens w/ too much light. Ive tried 12 hours light, and didnt notice a huge difference except after a couple days it seemed like light blue was tinting parts of my cake- at first I feared contaminants but it didnt spread or behave like any kind of contams, so I can only imagine its bruising. Is it possible for excessive light to bruise the mycelium? The blue tints seem to be where the light was hitting the cake most directly, but Ive never heard about this- Any thoughts? Thanks

most people recommend 12 on, 12 off.

mushrooms are not "photosynthetic" as i once read in another post.. light is used for directing the pins in which way to grow.
In other words too much light shouldn't hurt, but use what most pro's recommend.. 12/12, its proven to work :P

also, use the search post's function, this question has been answered hundreds of times.

I know it's a common issue, I did search the posts, but there's dozens of conflicting answers. Why did my cake bruise where the light was harsh w/ 12 hours, but not w/ 3-4 hours? I suppose it could be a coincidence, but it's weird that the bruising was right where the strongest light was hitting. I know mushrooms aren't photosynthetic, but I read somewhere that too intense of light can damage the myc

Most of the growing happens at night. Haven't you noticed that yet?

12 on / 12 off for the entire fruiting cycle, just my opinion

ive never heard anyone (intelligent) say 3-4 hours is optimal

It won't be any different with this thread. Pick successful growers and try to follow what they tell ya.
