easy questions for you know it alls - coir/spawn/casing/etc.
    #8409572 - 05/16/08 01:41 PM (15 years, 10 months ago)

im wanting to do a coir bucket, and am using grain bags, and all the threads around say quart per this and that...

-a 2lb bag of grain would equal how many quarts of grain???

-whats a good ratio of spawn to 1 brick of coir?

-if i use 1 full brick of coir, and ^ suggested amount of spawn, will this be too thick of a substrate for my bucket(10L or 3-5 gal.)?

-also i plan on using about a 80/20 coir/coffee mix. any other additives you suggest? and at what measurements?

casing will be pasturized mgmc with 1/2 TEASPOON of hydrated lime/cup of mgmc

Mahalo

for one brick of hydrated coir, i use about 4 quarts of spawn.

for each brick of coir, i fill up two 12qt dishpans.

80/20 sounds good. put your coffee and coir in the bucket then hydrate it with about a gallon of near-boiling water. then let it sit for a few hours. i usually throw in about 10% gypsum also.

don't use lime with MGMC. it is already ph balanced.

I wonder if it's buffered though? The casing going acidic during later flushes might require a buffer?

anymore input on these two opinions???

and also, with the first answer, it seems as though a full brick of coir will be TOO MUCH for a bucket grow...

i had planned on using 1/2 bricks, but wasnt sure

too much for a single bucket grow, indeed.

i'm guessing you could probably make 3-4 buckets with a brick. i don't use bags, so i don't know how much spawn you have, but just a quart per bucket is sufficient. mix most of it in and sprinkle just a tad on top for quicker colonization of the exposed area of the substrate.

oh, and gypsum is a ph buffer... i use it in my casing mixture at about 10%

ok, so nix the lime all together, and add just gypsum to the casing layer(in this case mgmc)@ about 10%(that seems a lot...)

the only additives im going to use to my coir then is as follows:

1/2 brick of coir
1/2 quart of spent coffee
1/2 quart of verm
&
2 quarts or LESS of spawn(wbs)

per bucket.

sound about correcto?

anyone with bucket exp. i cant seem to rationalize WHEN to make the holes in the bucket...i dont want to b4 hydrating...i dont want to b4 colonizing....WHEN?:lol:

i've made a few buckets.

i use home depot 5 gal buckets, and i could probably make 3 of them with one brick. maybe more with the vermiculite

so i would go for:
1/3 brick coir
1/3 quart coffee
1/2-1qt vermiculite
10% gypsum by volume
and 1-2 quarts of spawn (i fill my jars 3/4 full and only use 1)

per bucket

make your holes once the mycellium is slightly poking through your casing layer

ok. so the bucket needs no breathing while its colonizing?

howd your buckets turn out?
definately worth the little time and effort put in?

somethin i never really understood, how do you judge 10%(or any percentage for that matter) with the gypsum(or any additives). its not like you can take all the sub outta the bucket and wiegh it out...

i want less verm. more coir. so theres nutes.

so i'll do a trial and error with a few buckets on the sub mix ratios

AND LAST THING...till i think of the next thing  :
so you prefer mgmc with NO additives?

i cover my bucket with shrink wrap, then poke holes in it and cover them with micropore tape. definitely worth the effort, which is basically none.i got about 50g dry out of 2 flushes from my last one

i just eyeball the 10% maybe a little less.

personally, i don't use mgmc. but i would add gypsum if i did. i use 50/50+

ok.

i might case with 50/50+...the casing is really my least of worries tho.

do you fan or mist. i know Otto said he does occasionally if it looks like it needs it, but it really isnt necessary.

have you seen how he uses the shower cap. and that way he can pull it up and push it down to provide gas exchange...pretty clever, i suppose thats what ill do
