Video game unoriginality

It seems most games these days are just rehashes of old classics. I haven't seen a game that has been truly original since Super Mario.

i think there have a been quite a few great original games since the first super mario in my opinion. but, i get the feeling it's starting to taper off as gaming becomes more and more mainstream and more about the money.
the days of a couple passionate super nerds whipping up a piece of genius in their garage are mostly long gone. creating video games now is such a large undertaking and it requires months and months of development time with large teams at work, which means a hefty budget.... which then means developers don't want even want to try putting out anything different or original because they just consider it too much of a risk. consequently the industry stagnates and you get a flood of mediocre crap and sequel after sequel after sequel....
to offset the cost of development, you'll eventually see most games with in-game advertisements for companies like coca-cola and other bullshit like that... it's really sad.
the big publishers like electronic arts just eating up all of these smaller developers and smaller publishers and before you know it, 98% of the video game industry is going to be under the control of 2 or 3 major publishers that are only in it for the money .... i guess it's not unlike the movie industry or the music industry... or television..

Abes oddysee was a good original game. I haven't played a video game since I had a PS2 (long time ago)
A lot of people like the final fantasy games, are they original? I don't know.

It had a few glitches in it. Playing as the malkavians, or however you spell it, was my favorite part. I thought it had a cool story line and atmosphere.

can't remember exactly, something about when you play one of the lines you hear voices in your head and some other stuff, makes it funnier to play

Nintendo's where it's at if you're looking for originality. They've always been on the cutting edge and they always will be, I think. Just look at the Wii - they're re-defining how games are played in every way, rather than focusing on graphics alone (which do not make a fun game).
I bought an old gamecube a few weeks ago and I've already found five or six hugely fun games. Check these out:
Pikmin: Your spaceship's crashed on a strange planet and you've got to lead a pack of miniature-aliens around the hostile landscape to defeat weird monsters and find missing pieces of your ship.
Eternal Darkness SR: Horror games don't usually get to me, but this game is fucking scary. You play 12 different characters, in several very detailed time periods (Spanish Inquisition, World War II, Roman Era, etc), each of their stories tying into one huge, intricate plot. The voice acting is top notch and the storyline is one of the most original and compelling you'll find in any video game, on any system.

uhh... well, I played them, originally, when I was like... 7. I have no idea what console, I know it was a computer, but I have no idea.
However, I've been playing them, recently, on my Windows PC with that ScummVM program.

Am I the only one who doesn't think the wii is that original? They've been using that kind of technology in arcades for over a decade, they just made it into a smaller box...and almost all the games suck!
Postal games were fun for about 5 minutes...then they just get old. It's like a poor man's GTA.
Nothing original since Super Mario, OP? Come on now, there has been PLENTY of sweet games since then.

I'm partially with you on the NIntendo thing. The console as a whole is not that originally and if anything its behind the times in way to many aspects. The internet capabilties are garish the way you interface and use it. Far to complicated with the serial number approach for friending and shit,
The controllers ARE original and pretty cool for some things, and horid for others. I've spent years just trying to adjust to the damn analog sticks and a controler for 3d shooters on a console as is and now I have to try to use an even wierder controller? Meh, Mouse and keyboard will always be number 1, followed by a 360 controller.
The graphic engine is self explanatory. Outdated, underpowered, etc.
Nintendo has a lot of cool games, but far more shitty ones. Part of that is the target demographic of little kids and wholesome family fun they are aiming for, the other part is just plain crap which all sstems have.
Now, the one thing I love the wii for is having company over. Parties, etc. It is REALLY fun to play some silly as party game with your friends while getting hammered.

Oh yeah, Eternal Darkness was one of the best/scariest games I've ever played, especially the bathtub scene. First time I played through that scene I was with my friend and it was something like 2 a.m. and we both jumped straight up. The sanity meter was definitely one of the most innovative features I've encountered in a game, and I hope they make a second one.
