nice danny let me know how it goes when you taste it i have try a mexican version and was like eating rubber but fine. Regardless of its name, the mushroom is much too tough to consider eating, though several field guides list it as edible.http://www.mushroomexpert.com/polyporus_alveolaris.html http://www.messiah.edu/Oakes/fungi_on_wood/poroid%20fungi/species%20pages/Polyporus%20alveolaris.htm
here is good information of hexagonal polipores The Polyporaceae of North America-VII. The Genera Hexagona, Grifola, Romellia, Coltricia and Coltriciella i put the pdf An antifungal polypeptide, with a molecular mass of 28 kDa as judged by gel filtration and appearing as a single band with a molecular mass of 14 kDa in sodium dodecyl suflate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, was isolated from fresh fruiting bodies of the mushroom Polyporus alveolaris. The antifungal polypeptide, designated as alveolarin, demonstrated an inhibitory action on mycelial growth in Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium oxysporum, Mycosphaerella arachidicola and Physalospora piricola. Alveolarin was isolated with a procedure that entailed ion exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose, affinity chromatography on Affi-gel blue gel, and gel filtration on Superdex 75 by fast protein liquid chromatography.

Here are a few more pics of these mushrooms. I was checking out the pores under a dissecting microscope at around 40x and noticed when the light source was placed close to the fruitbody tiny bugs would emerge from the pores to escape the heat. Dreaded chiggers were among the hiding creatures.

Cactu: the zoned surface of your Hexagonia papirifera is really awesome! Don't think I've ever heard of the species, thanks for sharing.
