Border catches Windsor man with $4.9M worth of ecstasy

WINDSOR -- U.S. border guards discovered almost $5 million worth of ecstasy pills hidden in a van driven by a Windsor man at the Ambassador Bridge last Saturday.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the load of illegal drugs consisted of around 246,000 pills -- weighing a total of 76 kilograms -- stuffed into three duffel bags and a large backpack.

The 50-year-old male driver tried to enter the United States around 9 a.m., saying that he had nothing to declare and that he was going to meet his wife at the Detroit airport.

The inspecting officer asked for the keys to open the van's rear doors. Once the doors were open, the officer noticed a green tarp covering something on the floor.

The tarp was lifted, revealing the duffel bags. The officer then opened one of the duffel bags and found several vacuum-sealed baggies containing small coloured pills.

When asked what they were, the driver said he didn't know.

The driver and the van were both taken to secondary inspection areas. A field test of one of the pills showed that it contained methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), the medical name for ecstasy.

U.S. Customs estimated the load of pills has a total street value of $4,920,000.

The driver, the van and the contraband have all been turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents for further investigation.

Yeah because he'd really get $20 dollars a pills for that :rollseyes: . Try more like $1 million.
