Straight coffee substrate (Inspired by WarriorSoul)

I was reading a thread posted by WarriorSoul here. It seems like WS is going to be experimenting with some blended substrates and coffee, but I'd like to follow the original thread of using only coffee grounds as a substrate. I'm currently PCing a wide mouth pint jar filled per PF tek but substituting coffee grounds for BRF. The grounds are actually very fine b/c they were used to make espresso at *$. My only concern is the high acidity level, but if I don't have success with this one, I'll mix in some lime next time to see if it has any effect. Thanks to WarriorSoul for inspiring this experiment!

I have 12 pint jars of WBS and coffee grounds. The soak was with straight coffee. I have no idea if coffee only will work out but the grounds in all my jars colonized first and fast. The jars are all 100% now so it does work.

Cool, if this works, we'll have to do some posts regarding potency (i'm gonna try to fruit from coffee cakes).

100% coffee grounds is not a good idea for bulk, the P.H of the grounds are high not quite sure where they lay exactly but high enough to produce unfavorable conditions for mycelium.
I have grown Texas cubies off pure coffee grounds it does work but the grounds do not retain very much moisture at all, you'll be lucky to get a 2nd flush out of them.
Coir/coffee grounds is where its at guys, straight coffee grounds as a bulk is just wasting your time. You've been warned but hey, I'd like to see some pic's too, myco porn is always good
Have fun.

Thanks for the input hybrid...I hadn't thought about moisture issues, I hydrated just to field capacity, so I might have some issues if what you're saying is correct, but either way I appreciate the feedback

I had a conversation with RR not too long ago and he said to NEVER use full strength coffee for a soak, to only use 1/2 strength........thought this might help

You may be right about the soak I don't know, but I do know all of my wbs jars soaked in straight coffee are doing very well. But I have to do things the hard way!!!

Update: Its been several days, and I have no growth whatsoever...I really expected some trace of mycelium but...nothing. Theory: Well my main hypothesis is that ESPRESSO grounds shouldn't be used for a sub! The espresso roast we use is VERY dark roasted (lots of heat, for a long time) so I think that any nutrient value was lost in the roast process. I'm going to get some grounds from a much lighter roasted coffee and see how that goes, but I'll continue to update in this thread.

Interesting update: I didn't dump out the jar of grounds, I just left it in my room, and I went back to it a couple days ago and it is showing VERY rhizomorphic growth. It's only about 3/4 colonized (and its been over a month since inoculation) so I certainly don't recommend coffee as a sub, but I'm going to complete the grow when it reaches 100% to analyze pinset, fruit size, and potency.
