Wow. This lecture, given in 1964 by Leary, gave me a whole new perspective on psychedelics, human behavior, and psychedelic history. Worth a listen.
"You have to go out of your mind to use your head."
"Now, in taking this eccentric position, of taking the brain seriously, you run the risk of getting out of touch with your professional colloquies."
"Now from the standpoint of the strategy of the genetic material, every living species is simply a creative solution to a packaging problem."
"This [early imprinting of young ducklings on orange basketballs instead of mother ducks] is both funny and tragic, because it raises the question, in the case of the human being, what accidental orange basketball have you and I been exposed to early in life?"
"At times it seems to us that one of the functions of the mind is to rationalize and protect an accidental early imprint."
"We suggest that psychedelic drugs may be seen as chemical agents which temporarily suspend your old imprints."
"The thing which excites us these days is the corollary concept of psychedelic RE-imprinting."
"I think that anyone who doesn’t experience, at some moment during their psychedelic sessions, and intense awe-full fear has been cheated by their psychiatrist or their bootlegger."
"LSD is the most powerful aphrodisiac ever known to man."
Just in general, this series of podcasts is incredibly good. Stuff from the shulgins, extensive mckenna, leary, robert anton wilson, hoffman...

Timothy Leary went too far, too into the media, too into the youth. He basically got LSD banned. He had some good thoughts and some (too) radical ones.

"Leary was a fool. Drunk with 'celebrity-hood' and his own ego, he became a media clown-and was arguably the single most damaging actor involved in the destruction of the evanescent social movement of the '60's. Tim, with his very public exhortations to the kids to 'tune in, turn on and drop out,' is the inspiration for all the current draconian US drug laws against psychedelics. He would not listen to any of us when we asked him to please cool it, he loved the lime-light and relished his notoriety... I was not a fan of his."
-owsley stanley
“We are all wired into a survival trip now. No more of the speed that fueled that 60's. That was the fatal flaw in Tim Leary's trip. He crashed around America selling "consciousness expansion" without ever giving a thought to the grim meat-hook realities that were lying in wait for all the people who took him seriously... All those pathetically eager acid freaks who thought they could buy Peace and Understanding for three bucks a hit. But their loss and failure is ours too. What Leary took down with him was the central illusion of a whole life-style that he helped create... a generation of permanent cripples, failed seekers, who never understood the essential old-mystic fallacy of the Acid Culture: the desperate assumption that somebody... or at least some force - is tending the light at the end of the tunnel.”
- hunter S in fear and loathing
i back both of these statements.

I am downloading it now. Even if you do consider him a crackpot, it might still be worth listening to what he had to say.
Consider all options. Consider everything.

Yes the conventional wisdom is that leary fucked up.
But this talk is from 1964 before the vast majority of Americans had even heard of LSD or the word "psychedelic." Its fascinating to hear this guy speaking in earnest to a very hip audience about the discoveries people were making in the realm of psychology and psychedelics.
I've been no fan of leary's either but this talk totally changed my mind.
