I don't know if 'mixing' is the right term, but uh...making electronic music in the way that artists like shpongle and sasha and digweed make. Specifically, does it feel more like playing an instrument or more like tweaking a computer program? Can it be done spontaneously or is it very methodical?

i would guess it's like programming, i play guitar and piano and know friends who do that, have watched them do it, doesn't at all seem like playing an insturment...

i don't know how to make music yet, but i have a midi keyboard hooked up to my pc running through cubase and reason, and just playing with all the different software synths and sounds is fun as it is.

I very much enjoy making electronic beats.
It's not anything like playing an instrument and you can do so much more so it's great for exploring your creative side without many barriers.

There's nothing more satisfying to me, then producing my own rhythms. As far as what to use, I would suggest getting reason4 and learn the shit out of it, or get a analog step sequencer and monkey around, learn sampling techniques and be creative. If you get bored, try something new, lots of people get frustrated and intimidated by reason, but I garrentee you its one of the best pieces of software for the production of noise.
I'm srsly content with my setup, which is a korg emx which is a step sequencer and synthesizer that uses multi modeling technology, and then I sync with my computer to sample and drop the beat, with reason, sync'd threw midi transport, and then I've got a turntable, for samplage and skratching. Endless hours of nonstop fun.
Sometimes just fucking around, noise can just fall together so well, and the beat just comes together.

I only use reason.
My friend also makes electronic music he uses a progam called live that gives reason a really crisp and clear sound.

Creating electronic music still requires an understanding of music. Not every person who has played the cello sounds like Yo-Yo Ma. That being sad, the computer program you are tweaking is no different than those lugs you are tuning on a drum. It's all in how focused you approach it and ultimately if you enjoy listening to it (the audience is a different story).
For me it's incredibly satisfying to create something in FL Studio. I love going through folders and finding a song I made with it four years ago.
It's playing with sounds!
Playing live has always been a concern, but if you can write it electronically there must be way to translate it acoustically.

Ableton live is just a DAW, obv you can remaster the input you use for reason to come in, but you don't need to use a DAW to get reason to sound good. Reason is loaded with mastering equipment.
