Which mix should I use?
    #838940 - 08/23/02 08:00 PM (16 years, 30 days ago)

First
1/8 cup of brown rice powder (Health food stores and co-ops)
1/2 - 2/3 cup of horticultural vermiculite (medium grade) (garden centers and hardware)
40-45 cc's (milliliters) of water or (a little less than 1/4 cup) (1&1/2 ounces) (3 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon)

Second
Maximum fruiting formula:
1/4 cup of brown rice powder
1/2 cup of vermiculite
60 cc's water

Choice number two provides more water and nutrients. It's the better choice.

I found number one SEEMED TO colonize faster.......

The ones I did with number two took a long ass time to colonize but I think they were too dry so it may have been my fault .......

Screw rice flour. Rye berries work 5 time better. Just don't get them too wet. Seems to make them stronger when grown in rye. Colonize way faster. Get more flushes. This isn't from my own experience if you are a cop.

Very true, but depends on your method. I never have contam problems. Did first time using rye, but learned to soak for several hours and then 1 hour in the cooker at 15 psi. I will never go back to brf. The shit just grows too fast on rye. Like I said, depends on your method/conditions and where you get the grain from.

I also use the Hawke's Eye 50/50 casing. The little fellas love that stuff.

Have you ever tried birdseed/millet?

I've never used rye. It's easier to run down to the store and buy a bag of birdseed.

If you're having problems during the innoculation stage, why not try a multi-spore innoculation using a syringe instead of using cake chunks? If you don't like this idea, you could always make up some Karo jars and shoot up the grain with a liquid culture.

Good luck...
