xbox 360 or pc with controller?
    #8384557 - 05/10/08 07:30 AM (15 years, 10 months ago)

I want to be able to play a bunch of games and was thinking of getting the xbox 360 but if i could do all the things the 360 can do on my pc i might just do that.

I've got 2GB RAM ,80GB hard drive and 150GB hard drive, and a shitty video card.
I might buy an xbox 360 controller that you can use with a PC but i don't know how compatable it would be with games.

Advice?

Well most good pc games are designed for a keyboard. If you want more 'micromanaging' types of games that are very specific, stick with your pc and get a new video card. If you want games that are simpler and easier to just pick up and play, but still a lot of fun, get the XBOX.

Personally I like consoles better. There are more games that I can play for extended periods of time and they lend themselves to more social situations with your friends.

No you have to buy each one from a store and insert the disc every time you want to play it. They're all upwards of 50 bucks a game too, but computer games are pretty pricey as well.

As someone who works in the gaming department of a computer store, I will go ahead and give you my opinion.

The Xbox 360 will play games much better than your setup. No offense. The 360 was made solely for the purpose of gaming, therefore it is meant to handle graphics much better. Which is not to say that computer can't out preform the Xbox 360, but if you have a shitty video card, you're looking at poor graphics.

Any Wired Xbox 360 controller can plug in to a computer, you just have to get the drivers for it. They also make a wireless receiver that can connect up to 4 Wireless 360 controllers to your PC, and I imagine it comes with a CD that has the drivers. If the game you want to play on your PC has the option to change the controls around, you *Should* be able to use the 360 controller with it.

The 360 run $349.99 for the premium (20gb hard drive) and $449.99 for the elite (120gb hard drive). You could choose to buy either of those systems, or you could take the same money and beef up your computer. What kind of processor and video card do you have?

Remember that the 360 is also a little more social than a gaming PC. It's much easier to play Call of Duty 4 with multiple friends on your 360 (and a big tv screen) than it is to try to get 4 friends around your computer monitor.

Technically, yes, you can. But it would require modifying your Xbox to the point where you wouldn't be able to play online and totally voiding your warranty. And trust me, you want that warranty on the 360. Those things fail. Epically

360's would be for your casual gamer who wants to avoid the mucking about with computers.

A PC is for the serious side of your gaming and work .

If you play online games having a good video card is pretty important. That's all I use a computer for usually is online games.

When you get a chance, try to figure that out. I was gunna say what series is it (5000, 6000, 7000, 8000, etc) but that's not always accurate. For instance, my 7900 GS is slightly better than an 8600 GT.

Honestly, as an avid PC gamer and a converted 360 gamer, overall I would go with the xbox. Its worth the money especially if you have internet and can afford to spend 50 bucks a year roughly for xbox live membership. Its awsome.

The PC was/is my stomping ground for gaming for the last 20 years and I've owned many consoles but none recently until my xbox. Now gaming on my PC happens for lan bashes when rock band / GH2 isnt up and running for whatever reason.

I'd go Xbox route personally if gaming if your main thin gyou would be dong with the iten. xbox live alone makes it fucking radical and gnarly to the max du0d.

Sounds like your PC is pretty decent (other than the vid card), I would probably grab a ~$150 to $200 graphics card and your PC would be very gaming capable. Then save up for another week or month and grab a 360. That is, if you can afford it.

Also, with a 360, you have to pay $50/year to play online. Just another expense to be aware of. PC games can be pirated, 360 games generally can't.

Pirating 360 stuff can be done but is a pain in the ass, does void warrenty and does break live play so its lame to do it. However, when takling GAMING the 360 blows the PC out of the water now as far as most genres of games. I find a few are still better on the PC, like MMO's and the selection of real time stratedgy like Age of Empire or Rise of Nations.

IMO the 360 is worth the money, most games are worthwhile as long as you read reviews and pay attention to what consumers are all buying and you are SURE to love the system.

Hell, the 360 can even stream mdeia over a network from your PC to play/display in your living room if you set it up to do so.

I'm currently playing through bioshock to get some achievments I missed the first time and am enjoying the story just as much as I did before when I completed it.

Gears of war also never seems to get old. Deathmatch is fun, teh co-op is always a blast, etc.

Xbox:
- Ready of out the box, plug and play
- Large, managed online/downloadable content
- Hooks up to any TV
- Cheaper overall
- On/offline Multiplayer
- Is not outdated yearly with faster models
- Retained value (computers lose value fast)

PC:
- Better graphics with right hardware
- Hardware, game, driver, other computer issues
- Higher system price
- Online only multiplayer
- More choices for hardware, games
- Outdated almost yearly, constant upgrading to keep up with newer, more hardware intense games

360 wins IMO, fun to get sucked into and play for hours.
