pan cyan id
    #838292 - 08/23/02 12:15 PM (21 years, 8 months ago)

Growing on alder chips, cap .5-3 in. brown wavy cap that fades to tan as it dries, dark purple brown almost black spore print, stem whitish, hollow, NO pellicile, NO blue bruising. Does pan cyan always bruise blue? What have I got here?
51 degrees N latitude

They ap-ear to be a species of Flammulina, possibly F. velutipis?

They are not P. P. cyanescens. Thats for sure.

Based on the photo and your description, I'll wildly guess Nematoloma sublateritium (or one of its close relatives). Were there any young specimens to check for the presence of (and appearance of) a partial veil?

pan/copelandia cyanescens is a manure/sub tropical species - the lignious species that you are describing would more likely Psilocybe Cyanescens - sorry to point out the obvious...

Thanks for your reply. Any Idea of the northern range of psilocybe cyan? "Alaska" is a big state, I'm hoping to narrow that down.
Hi volts
p.s. There was a partial veil on the youngsters.

[re: They are not P. P. cyanescens. Thats for sure]

MJ--can you clarify the features which eliminate ps. cyan in your mind? Flammulina Velutipes doesn't seem right considering it would have a white spore print, and these stems are all wrong.

Clearly, the fact that they don't bruise blue is a give away, but I would like to know what characteristics jump out to you as not ps. cyan-- clearly, 51 degrees lat is too high for the pan cyans.

Thanks in advance,
JJBB

I made an error in my location in the original post. I?m around 61 n. latitude (not 51, that would be London). Still wondering if there are any ps. cyans around here. Here are other pics of the same flush of mushrooms:
