Outdoor cannabis and clones
    #8282274 - 04/14/08 01:33 PM (15 years, 10 months ago)

Well its spring again and another exciting time of the year to start growing! Ive got some groovy strains, one that I used last year (unknown strain, just a fav of mine) and what is supposedly called the "Bob marley" strain from a friend.

I was only able to successfully germinate 4 seeds. three of mine (the only seeds i got from last years plant) which i personally named, Hillbilly Hellfire (copyright) LOL and one BM strain. In hopes and a little bit of luck perhaps they all will be female. Hopefully just one, we will see. Anywho, heres my question(s):

How far into the vegetative stage must I wait until I take clones? Ive heard to wait until the end of summer right before the plants go into the flowering stage... but that doesnt seem right to me because the clones need to develop during the long summer before it needs to bud.
So should I wait a certain period of time before I take them or should I judge my timing more on the plants growth and maturity itself before making the cut?

Another question; about how many clones can one obtain from one female in one season outdoors? How fast do the clones you take from the mother plant take to regrow before you can cut another?
the reason I ask is, me and my buddy are hoping to take at least 10 clones a piece from alt east one plant. Do you guys/girls think its possible for the clones to grow just as big as a mother plant before fall?

Ive tried researching for similar questions looking for answers, but Id like to hear what others have to say...

love, peace n chicken grease!

You can start taking cuttings once you have at least 5 sets of "true" leaves. If you wait until right before it starts to flower, you are basically cloning the buds. I don't know how many cutting you can get from one mother plant outdoors, because I grow indoors. What you should do is keep your mother plant indoors and take cuttings from it, root them and then plant THOSE outside. That way the growing season(outdoors) isn't compromised by the length of time it takes for your cuttings to take root and you don't run the risk of losing your mother plant to weather, pest, herbivores, cops, etc... Theoretically you can take hundreds of cuttings over time from one mother plant. A good rule of thumb is to not take more than 1/3rd of the plant for cuttings to clone at one time. Just so you know, you can clone the buds indoors. What you do is wait until your plant starts to flower and take a cutting that contains the flower and root it( I use a rooting hormone called Rootone). Once it roots, grow it just like you would your plant. Cloning buds is a great way to get very large buds. Out of my last set of cloned buds, the smallest one weighed just shy of 3 ounces cured.

Interesting Gandalf, i never heard of cloning buds! so you just take a cutting from a plant thats starting to bud, and when you bring it in a root it, it doesn't stretch or grow taller, just puts on mass? sounds pretty sweet!
As for me i usually buy clones and at some point, just take a cutting off each, and in turn, doubling my plants
But yeah i think its pretty much safe to take a cutting after the plant seems to be holding its own and seems strong. usually 4-5 nodes sounds about right

Clones taken off a flowering plant will root much quicker but the resulting plant will be flimsy and weak.

Worst thing you can get is a set of clones from a revegetated or flowering mother.

I have found they do better outdoors due to the extended flowering period but indoor they blow.

Hmm interesting. My friend has a re-vegged mom that has proven to be extremely difficult to clone for some odd reason. Maybe that's it.

One suggestion I liked that came from LadyZ was to take clones of your plants, once the clones set - flower the plant that was clipped, and just regrow from the clones.

yah, i understand that, but he had no choice in this case. The mom we have now was a gift from one of his friends. So he took the thing and managed to get it back to looking really fucking awesome. He has plans to flower it but he wanted to keep some clones of it around to use for later. Unfortunately out of the 50 clones he took only 5 survived (which im now flowering hehe).

He even went out and bought an ez-cloner to make things a bit easier and the bastards are still refusing to root quickly (or at all). I haven't been able to figure out why, i've never ever had problems cloning plants, so this may be the reason we can't get the damn things to root.

Some Cannabis phenotypes do take a lot longer to root than others. This could be the problem.
