Amish man arrested for milk
    #8371922 - 05/07/08 04:58 AM (15 years, 9 months ago)

http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/brooklyn/2008/05/01/2008-05-01_raw_milk_lovers_upset_over_amish_arrest.html

Quote:

It's the milk spill that crossed state lines.

Brooklyn raw milk enthusiasts are crying over the loss of their supplier - a horse and buggy-driving Amish farmer from Pennsylvania.

Mark Nolt of New Line, Pa., was arrested and shut down last Friday for selling the contraband.

"Oh God. My heart is pounding. I can't believe what a God---- police state this is," said one Brooklyn customer who made monthly pickups of raw dairy products from Nolt that the farmer had dropped off in Manhattan by workers.

"I gave him $100 last week for a huge delivery of stuff, including raw cream that I planned on using to make cream puffs," she said.

The Brooklyn outcry came after six Pennsylvania state troopers raided Nolt's farm and confiscated his illegal dairy.

"They swooped in on Friday morning like a bunch of Vikings, handcuffed me and stole $30,000 worth of my milk, cheese and butter," Nolt told the Daily News.

Nolt is a devout Mennonite who sells raw dairy products at his farm and has them transported by truck to customers in Delaware and across New York City, where the raw goods are illegal.

the point is eventually they will come for you

and unless you stand up for others' freedoms nobody will be left to stand up for yours

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

QFT

Either there are a lot of really stupid cops, or there are too many cops.

Neither option sounds good to me.

In my mind there is no way to avoid results such as this without a libertarian philosophy.

Fact is, raw milk is dangerous. There is reason to be concerned about people drinking it.

Do we as a society accept that even realistic concerns may be redressed by government discretion and regulation, or do we insist that we be free to live our lives without molestation by others, so long as we likewise mind our own affairs?

Vote libertarian.

And I'm sick of seeing people arrested for bullshit. Traffic court, et cet.

Leave people the fuck alone. Give them a summons. They do not need to go to jail till they refuse to show up a few times. This is bullshit.

Raw milk could easily be sold under a license. State (or fed) inspectors could make sure it is handled properly.

Back in the time of this law they didn't have the refrigeration systems we have today.

This is really a waste of police time IMO

Fact is, raw meat is dangerous, yet we still sell it. I don't need the government micromanaging my life to ensure that I don't accidentally scrape myself on a sharp corner. Government regulation should end with a warning label on the product.

Fuck no! Murders and rapists make the idea grunt in a police state. The only looking they'll do is to recruit them.

They want corruption, they want dirty cops that break the rules, they want fear and intimidation.

This is another example of the state bullying people out of their freedoms. Now, when I go over to Belgium, I get myself unpasteurised butter. How do I know it's unpasteurised? Because I work in the farm that makes it, and make it myself. it's very nice, and I'm still alive to tell the tale.
