Sugest me some good books...

Ok, so I've tried this "_reading_" thing recently and its pretty neat. I wanna get some more of what you call "books" but I'm not sure whats good. I want something more then a story - I'll be reading "The Universe in a Nutshell" by Steven Hawking soon it looks good. I guess I want books about physics, mathimatics, and science in general. Anyone read any kinds of "books" like this?

Other then that I read a Steven King novel, although entertaining I am left with the feeling that I wasted hours of my life reading it and have nothing but a good 'story' in my mind.

I'd suggest pretty much anything by Richard Feynman, a Nobel prize winning physicist who had a wondeful knack for making very difficult concepts available to laypeople. He was also a wonderfully down to earth sorta guy who wrote a fair amount of his stuff in strip joints as he found it easier to concentrate there - not your typical academic sort, eh? and the late dr carl sagan wrote a number of enjoyable books (& hosted a PBS series "cosmos" - great TV !!!)
isaac asimov did several books about science & math (& about almost everything esle, hehheh...)
stephen jay gould & lewis thomas, more biology-oriented, but still great stuff...
gardner, hofsteader, jastrow, crick, capra, bentov...

The most fascinating nonfiction book I?ve ever read was "Chronology of Science and Discovery" by Isaac Asimov. It explains how every invention and discovery by humans came about and how it influenced human history. Starts with the discovery of stone tools and fire and goes all the way to stem cells and human cloning. I see the world in a totally different way now and I understand it a thousand percent better. I forgot to include it in the Life-Changing books thread.

If you like Steven Hawking and that kind of stuff you?ll love this book. It gets more technical towards the end because the discoveries are more high-tech but if you read it through you?ll understand it all. Also check out A Brief History of Time by Hawking.

I recommend this book to anyone fascinated by science or history.

Heh - I'm re-reading 'Godel, Escher and Bach' these days - nice to know that Hofstadter is still known!
