aerial myc, rhizomorphs, the beginnings of a good pinset?
    #8371511 - 05/07/08 12:12 AM (15 years, 10 months ago)

Ive got two pf cakes in a terrarium with a layer of wet perlite in the bottom. Ive been exchanging air 3-5 times a day, and keeping the perlite moist. Im puzzled after doing a lot of reading because I cant find any pics of what Ive got going on, so Im wondering if these little things are the early stages of my pinset, or the myc reaching out because Im doing something wrong with my FC conditions.

What are these little guys?!

you have no visible pins, you might have some knots forming but they are too small to show up on film

i know i dont have pins persay, but what im wondering is if those little protruding mycelium 'thorns' are going to turn into pins.

No. There are not any signs of pins or any precursors to pins. These will not turn into pins although I have read in other post that they do. It is just mycelium telling you that they humidity on the surface of the cake is too low and that they need to be misted.

so i should be misting more often? these have been in the FC for about 3 days already. i dunked for 18hrs and rolled before putting them in. i guess i figured i didnt need to mist much if at all, given that I'm using a standard method for maintaining humidity.

I would mist them twice a day. Why would you think that you would see pins after 3 days?

i didn't think i would, but when i did extensive searching to see what those little protrusions are (i didnt get them when i did cakes before) there was a mixed bag of answers ranging from its normal myc growth to some saying they are the very first beginnings of pins before actually being pins.

i'm surprised that you're saying to be misting pf cakes, for some reason i had gathered that you didnt mist pf cakes...learn something new every day!

well the majority of people here are idiots and they repeat false information without first trying these techs.
Cakes love to be misted. Those aerial rhizomorphs are no indication of pins. They only mean that the mycelium is heathly and aggressive.
Pins will look like tiny specs of salt. Let me see if I can find a pic of some pins...... i cant. Let me take a pic real quick

okay, the ones in the circle are knots/pins. The one lone arrow points to a larger pin. its hard to see what the larger one is and my batteries died on my camera

awesome! thanks for the tips tahoe. when you say misting twice a day does that mean like at the beginning of an 8 hr day and end of that day, or every 12 hours? is the interval crucial? sorry for the noob questions, but this is a new idea to me (as far as cakes).

alright perfect. i just misted them, and will do so again in 12 hours, and continue that routine. my reading tells me i am within reason to hope for pins in a few more days, would you concur?

Takes at least a week to start seeing knots since initiating fruiting.

ahhh so that will be knots, and even more time until actual pins, and eventually fruits? that is good news oddly, as i can probably get my martha together and going by the time these casings are flushing. yay!

BRF cakes start the fruiting process relatively soon after you dump them from their jars. They're exposed to light, oxygen, and a temperature difference as they come out.

okay, so when did my cakes start forming knots? You do realize that they were submerged in water for 4+ days after they were birthed?

Water contains a good amount of oxygen. Which is why LC's are possible. For example.
